I've ordered the mount and plan to mount a Burris scope on this recent S&W Model 66 purchase:

The mount is a Weaver (this K frame isn't drilled):

The scope is a Burris 2x:

The intended use is hunting whitetail at 50 yd or less. Load will probably by a 180 gr solid lead point at the 1100 fps mark.
Anybody have any suggestions, recommendations, or observations based on experience?

A buddy of mine once had me rig up a 1.5x Redfield on a Ruger Super Blackhawk 44 mag with 7.5" barrel. He killed a lot of deer with it when he was pumping oil wells.
Shots were up to 100 yds and dropped most of the deer where they stood.
This 357 isn't going to match that 44 but it should be good enough for short shots with the proper load and good shot placement.
We've got some handgun hunters here and I'd value your input about this!
Thanks!

I'd probably be more inclined to use a 140 grain HP than a solid, although I'd limit my shots to broadside only.

My $.02. The 357 is marginal, although I have killed a doe with a 6 inch Security-Six and 158 JHP. I shot her through the lungs/chest area and she walked about 50 yards before laying down. I also shot a bigger Mule deer buck with a 44 mag, loaded max with a 240 Sierra JHP and it DRT. For what it's worth, I believe the 357 lead cast bullet will produce too small of a wound channel so shot placement will be paramount. I think I would pick atleast a 158 JHP or better yet a hot loaded 180 JHP. Good luck with your hunt.

Now to the range to see how it shoots at 50 yds!
