Ok, so I have a question that has been bouncing around in my brain for quite a while. I have been afraid to ask it fearing that I may be thrashed for being an a know nothing moran, however I can no longer hold my peace...
I have been looking at a lot of SAA and older DA revolvers online as I lust for a new blackhawk 357, S&w model 27 or 19 and it seems like the front sight on many revolvers are really, really high in comparison to the rear sight. I have always shot semi autos or my GP 100 where top of front sight and the top of the rear sight are on the same plane in my sight picture to get the bullet to land where I want it to go but some revolvers have a really high front sight and really low rear sights that look like to me you will always be hitting low. Is the way that I want to look at the sights of a gun, ie have the top of the rear and front sight on the same plane right on the target incorrect.. How does this work with guns with really tall front sights? |

The reason for the difference between revolvers and semiautos, related to the height of the front sight, is that the receiver has the rear sight attached to it; the receiver also has a smaller-diameter barrel screwed into it. The higher sight is due to the difference between the top of the barrel and the top of the receiver. Look at this pic of the Luger: http://pnmedia.gamespy.com/planetcoh.gamespy.com/images/history/luger.jpg It's barrel is a smaller diameter than the receiver so it needs a higher front sight than this XD45: http://guerillatactical.com/images/XD45.jpg Now consider this pic of the GP100: It has a rib running the length of the barrel, reducing the difference between the top of the barrel and the top of the reciever: http://world.guns.ru/handguns/ruger_gp100_4in_357fl.jpg Hope this answers your question! ETA I have been afraid to ask it fearing that I may be thrashed for being an a know nothing moran,
DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK QUESTIONS! There are no stupid questions, only stupid mistakes. And anyone who would ridicule you for a 'stupid' question would razz you even worse for a stupid mistake. These people are known as 'trolls' and can (usually) be safely ignored... because they are ignorant. Franksymptons, Thanks for setting me straight with an excellent post. It all makes sense now. 870fan |
