I just picked up a cap and ball .44 out of boredom. What do I need to shoot it? What projectiles, powder, and caps do y'all recommend?

When I got to shooting mine, I used the hornady pellets, 30grain to minimize the number of variables.

451 balls Speer

CCI #11 primers - or whatever you can find

Some of their stuff is out of stock, but you get the idea. I use crisco for lubing the front of the cylinder and hot soapy water for cleanup, with break free for storage. Remember to crimp the primers slightly when you put them on, and to shoot a primer in each chamber prior to loading.

What kind of BP revolver? I've got a pietta 1860 copy.

Get some wonder wads in lieu of the grease. I have a 1858 repro and it shoots wonderfully with 35 grains of fffg and a hornady ball seated over a wonderwad.

I have an Armi San Marco brass framed .44 Colt 1860 Army copy that I picked up cheap at a local estate auction. It was new in the box with the Gander Mountain price tag still on it. I've had good luck with CCI #11 magnum caps, Pyrodex "P" powder and Speer round balls. The manual that came with my revolver specifies .454 round balls, so you might want to see what caliber ball fits yours better. I also use the lubed "Wonder Wads" as well.. Besides the formentioned accoutrements, I also picked up a brass powder flask with the measuring tube, measures 30 grains of powder just by turning the flask upside down, a plastic percussion cap "nippler", a tube of "Bore Butter", (to season the barrel with) and small steel pick to clear the nipples with. Hot soapy water (any dish soap works fine) to clean with, an electric hair dryer set on high to completely dry the weapon and any quality gun oil for lube. I would also add a nipple wrench if you plan on shooting it alot and a spare set of nipples, preferably stainless steel. I shoot only 30 grain charges thru mine to avoid streching the brass frame.
