S&W 686 Question > Revolvers

I have a 686 with a 2.5 inch barrel. I am really happy with the action and like everything about the gun except the barrel length. If I replaced the 2.5 incher with a 4 inch barrel I would end up with a 4 inch, round butt holster weapon. My question is would I need to replace the extractor rod with a longer one?

Considering the premium the 2.5" barrel gets you could probably find someone willing to swap and throw some money your way. Changing a barrel on a Smith is not exactly an inexpensive proposition.

Well, I have a barrel already....haven't priced the installation yet. I do like the round butt and I can't get that on the 4 inch pre-lock revolvers. ....and as I say it would be a whole different action to start over with.

You would need a longer ejector rod.
The 2 1/2" S&W's use a shorter rod then the longer versions.

And the barrel may or may not fit properly. It's not a drop in installation.

I have a mint 4" barrel I would trade you for your 2.5 inch. I thought if I found a good price on a 6" 686 I could swap out the barrel but then found a nice 4" revolver complete. Str8 trade...I can send you pics [email protected]

The 686-4 was avaliable with a round butt and 4 inch barrel from the factory.
Their not too hard to find, I would recommend leaving the 2.5 alone as it is quite collectable compared to the 4 or 6 inch versions.

Sell the 2.5 when you find the 4"
