I have a Colt Python and would like to know how to tell what frame it is so I can order the correct set of grips.

Is there a place I can get factory grips or reproductions?

The Colt forum is the place to find Python (original) grips. Be prepared for sticker shock 175-250 seems to be the norm.

Are you looking for factory grips or custom wood grips?  Look at the year of manufacture because if it was one of the later Pythons it would have had factory rubber grips.

Wow! What is it that is so special, that makes factory wooden grips so expensive?  Oh my!

Supply can't meet the demand, mostly. Colt isn't making them anymore.
Most don't find the original wood grips too comfortable, but since they aren't making Pythons anymore and the collector value on them has risen, there's more folks wanting them in factory original condition. Most Pythons I see for sale have either badly worn original grips or a rubber replacement. It doesn't help that there is a tendency to inflate the price on something that has the Colt name on it. It used to bother me, but I guess you can get used to anything. It's just a part of collecting guns from a famous, high quality manufacturer that has a huge following.

My 6" stainless Python wears Hogue rubber grips. Its wood originals sit in the safe inside the original box. That's just because I shoot it. The wood grips are quite attractive, and the gun looks much much nicer with them.

If you think that is expensive for a set of factory grips, look at S&W Coke style grips––they go upwards of 600 bucks a lot of times.

My factory wood grips are not on my Python either, I have a set of checkered sandlewood that feels a lot better in the hand.
