Local gunsmith has a 5 screw 357 6" blued revolver. Bluing is about 85%, rear sight blade is broken, asking $550. What model would this be? What is the difference between model 19 and 27? Thank You!! |

I'm no S&W collector-grade expert, so I can't say for sure, but I do know that I have never seen a 5 screw K frame magnum...and I've seen a LOT of k frame magnums. Now, a 4 screw, yes. The 5 screw S&W .357s I have seen were all the M27 series guns...actually many were built before S&W began using model numbers like they do today, and quite a few before WWII. An 85% 5 screw .357 could well be "worth" that amount of money to sone folks, but not as a shooter. Pass on it as a using gun. Edited to say that the "K" frame guns would be the M13/19/66 size frames and the "N" frames are used for the M27/28/29 sized revolvers...they are bigger and heavier and most parts do not interchange. |

I've got a pre-model 27 5-screw, bought it in 87 for $350 (factory nickeled w/5" barrel). Seems like a high price to me. From what I've seen, most S&W pistols made before 1955 all had five screws (four on the side plate, one in front of the trigger guard). The model 19 didn't come out until 1955, so I really doubt it came out in a 5-screw; I'd say it's an N-frame. One nice thing about those older models, though--they were all hand-fitted, and therefore shoot like a dream. Don't really get that kind of quality anymore.... |
| The Mod 27,28 were built on the N frame which was the largest at the time, the model 19 was built on the K frame which is the medium frame and of course the J frame is the small frame. In the late 1970s S&W introduced a beefed up version of the medium frame and called it their L frame which was intended to supply a stronger frame for those people who wanted to shoot alot of full strength 357 mag rounds. It has the same grip size of the 19 but with a larger cylinder and therefore bigger upper frame. But the bottom line is that $550 bucks for worn mod 27 with a broken sight blade is not a good deal. |
