I have a s&W 44 magnum revolver model #629-3 with a 6 and 3/4 inch barrel and I need to know what letter frame it is. J frame, L frame, etc. Also does it have a round or flat butt?

All S&W .44 Magnums are N-frames. They can be round or square butt. With your gun's longer barrel, it's probably a SB. Remove the grip panels to confirm.

It's an N frame. Does the grip frame have a rounded profile to the backstrap? If so, it's a round butt.

Round butt:

Thank you guys for the N-frame help.  I still dont know if its a round or flat butt.  I took off the grips and the bottom of the frame is completely flat, so does that mean its a "flat butt"?  Thank you

facepalm...

Look at the backstraps on the guns in the pictures I posted. Notice that the guns in the top picture have backstraps which curve into a rounded shape? Those are round butt guns.

The backstrap of the gun in the bottom picture continues down in a more or less straight line until it reachs the bottom of the grip frame and forms a square profile. This is a square butt gun.

Flat butt?

You'll learn a ton there.

I'm waiting on a recommended book from a member there titled "The History of Smith and Wesson" by a Mr. Joy Ginks I believe is his name.

You can search there and find TONS of information and discussions you'd never imagine to be found so easily.
