I'm looking for a nice little medium/light weight stubby. Does anyone have experience with this model with the shrouded hammer?

The 638 has a shrouded hammer(ie a hammer with practically zero hammer spur showing) that you can thumb cock for SA firing if necessary.

What purpose are you going to use this gun for, target shooting, concealed carry, home defense, etc?

Personally I like the Cenntinial(DAO only) guns.

My 638 is with me whenever possible.  I've carried mine for two years and I've never had any problems with it.  I have plenty of handguns, but this one is the one that tends to come along with me.

You'll hear it referred to as a "Bodyguard" style snub nose.  I prefer Bodyguards for CCW, just because I like them better.  Centennials are great, too.

ive carried my 638 w/ crimson trace grips for about 2 years here too.

no outfit i wear that i can't stash it.  too many great points make this handgun perfect for everyday carry.  the laser grips make accuracy a non-issue, regardless of what hand you're using, what your other hand is doing, or how close in the target.

im around 900 rounds into this onmine.  you'll have no problems selling it if you dont like it.  but you will.

I like the 638 best out of all the J frames.

It can operate the same as a 642 or a 637.

Love mine.

Great CCW piece with what I consider to be an added bonus in that it can be fired single action without the snagging risk inherent with a spur hammer.

Some say they don't like it because the "ears" of the shroud can collect lint & debris.

I have never found this to be a problem.  It's easily cleaned and I think you'd need to get a lot of stuff in there to affect operation.

all the Bodyguards are great carry guns.

I love mine. I chose it because of the DA/SA without worrying about snagging. I'm sure when i need it i'll use it in DA. but it's always nice to have the choice of SA for those longer distance shots.

I've got one. I generally am not a fan of J-frames, but I think this is the best of them.

How hard is it to decock a Bodyguard?

Not that hard but it is something you definitely do not want to do with a live round. I say if it has to be cocked with a live round let the round fly. If not do not cock it.

Remember muzzle safety!

I've been carrying the Model 38 airwieght for a number of years.  It handles and conceals well and is a hoot to shoot.  Just blow the lint out of it every now and then.
