When it comes to a Python, buy whatever makes you the happiest.  I've always believed that the Colt Python with a 6" barrel in royal blue was without a doubt the sexiest handgun ever made...

Not the best pic in the world but you get the idea.

If I had my way (I don't, it was inherited from my father-in-law), it would be stainless, but there's just something about the classic looks of a Python. Shoots like a dream, too. Get one, you won't regret it.

I'd get a stainless: no finish to rub off, resists rust, can clean up nicely with those lead wipeaway cloths

Blue would be second choice, looks traditional

Nickel is last choice, sooner or later I'd think the finish would flake off or something

I always was under the impression that nickel plating gives a slicker trigger and carbon steel gives a nicer trigger pull than stainless but Pythons are mainly for looks anyway. That why I had bought and kept mine.

Wow - that is a toughy. I bought a SS one thinking I would shoot it as SS is easier to cleanup.

To be frank, I then went out and bought a older (70's vintage) Royal Blue one to shoot. The 'pre-strike' Pythons have a much better DA trigger than the 90 vintage SS ones IMHO. Plus I actually found it easier to clean up the blue'd one than the SS. The SS shows every spec of dirt.

Believe me, I was strickly a (bright & shiny) SS revolver man, but there is something classy about the Royal Blue finish. Nothing like it out there today.

I think waxing the blue'd ones makes it easier to clean up.

I mostly shoot the older blue one. If you take care of it will give you many years of great plinking.

Go for the blued.
I finally bought a 6" Royal Blue, after years of waiting.

Wow, they're really incredible.
And boy, do they shoot.

I have a mid-sixties vintage 4" Royal Blue Python.  I understand the logic of a stainless one, but the looks of the Royal Blue finish trumps logic.  That piece is a stunner.

Anyway, I doubt you will regret getting your Python no matter which finish you decide upon.

I know it looks that way, but that was an intentional photo of just the colts. I do like them but have many other brands I like just as well. It is hard to beat the python as far a revolvers go. Oh, that photo is not up to date, I recently picked up another python 6 inch that looked like it had been dragged behind a car on a paved road. I sent it to Colt to have it refinished and the timing done. I don't have a camera good enough to show the excellent work they performed on this wreck that I sent them. And they timed and tuned it while it was there. It looks new and feels new. I can't say enough good about the work they did on that particular gun.

Sounds like you rescued a wayward Python and gave it a good and loving home...

I have been tempted several times to do the same thing and pick up a shooter Python.

There was (is) a gunsmith in Florida (Wally(?) something) who customizes Pythons with roller bearing actions.  I shot one at a PPC shoot a long time ago, and the trigger action on it was absolutely .  It didn't have the usual stacking sensation in the action, like the standard Python does.  I wish I could shoot (loose nut behind the grips- not the gun's fault) Pythons in DA as well as I can do with my Smiths.  I almost never shoot a DA revolver in single action.

Anyway, the Python is a true classic.

Love that grip.  May have to get one for mine.  Hogue right?
