I should be receiving the revolver next week. It is from the 1960's-early70's I believe. I am not looking to baby it, but I want to avoid problems as I hear they are somewhat complex to work on. I was hoping that someone can answer some questions I have.

-I do not plan on shooting +P's, but do I need to worry about other 38spcl. loads?

-Will it hurt to dry fire the revolver?

-Is the revolver drop safe once cocked?

-Will Colt work on these?

-If I want a carry revolver, should I put this piece in the safe and go buy an airweight?
Thanks in advance.

You are correct that series of DS is not +P rated, but you'll have no issues with any factory loads

Mixed reviews on dry firing, I buy snap caps personally to be safe

YES all Colt revolvers have a safe action to carry on a fully loaded cylinder

Yes Colt still does work on these pistols and they do a great job. I've had 2 I sent in for repair recently and they did excellent work for a very reasonable price.

I PERSONALLY say carry and shoot your Colt. You have a 6 shot over a 5 shot and it is still a very accurate and dependable carry piece.

I contacted Colt a while ago about my Detective Special that I believe is in the same age group as your and they said +p's were OK in limited shooting.  I've only shot 1 box of 25 of winny's SD ammo.  It was very accurate with it too.  At least when I could tame the recoil.

The Colt owner manual will tell you even in limited numbers +P will shorten the life of your DS.IF YOU WANT TO SHOOT +P's buy the DS II OR MAGNUM CARRY.
AS TO THEIR(COLT'S)SERVICE , well its excellent.I bulged the cylinder to the topstrap of my Detective Special back in 2004.I had unknowingly fired some rather hot reloads. The recoil was noticibly sharper than nomal.well some yahoo dimwit friend of a friend must have double loaded some of the reloads. To Colt's credit they replaced the cylinder and buffed her up for the price of the shipping to them.I love my Detective Special.I'll only shoot store bought ammo from here on out.

DO NOT USE +P AMMUNITION IN A DETECTIVE SPECIAL, ESPECIALLY IF IT IS BEFORE +P RATING. My DS was rated for +P and < 30 rounds ended up torquing the barrel. I had to send it in for repair (also rebluing on my dime) and everything had to be redone (almost a second time). Unless your life depends on it, I would NOT fire +P out of a DS.
