If I am not mistaken the snubbie is one of the most popular revlovers out there. It is many of people back up or shtf firearm. It certainly has its place in history but my question is what is the effective range of a .38/357cal - 2 1/2bl? When you are at the range are you practicing more of point shooting or actually aiming? I recently brought my wife the federal low recoil self defense .38s jhp in 110g hydroshoks and we haven't had a chance to goto the range. Has anyone tried this the low recoil stuff in .38s or any other caliber? Since its a " low recoil" round do you suppose that it will be traveling with low velocity?

Short barrels make for lower velocities, but the snubbies can still get the job done. In years past I have shot S&W and Colt 2" .38s at 50yd. many times and you would be astounded how accurate they can be. Still, they are intended for close range. Out to 15yd. they will do fine and that is well beyond the range where most incidents with CCW happen. She will do fine with the 110 HydroShoks, as they are designed to work at the lower velocities.

My .38 special snub nose is accurate within +/- 4 feet at up to 5 feet away :)

No, but seriously, I couldn't go for more than a random body shot at more than 15 feet, and I'm a pretty good shot. These buddies are for in your face action when shtf.

Federal website claims 980 fps at the muzzle dropping off to 945 at 25 yds.  Energy is 235 foot/pounds at the muzzle and 217 at 25 yards.  Here is the site:

http://www.federalcartridge.com/ballistics/Ammo_Search.aspx?act=choose&firearm=2&s1=1

This is from a 4 inch barrel so mileage may vary.  No I dont work for Federal,  if you have a chronograph you can do the math yourself, or trust HydroShok which has been the gold standard for years.  The new mega load seems to be the 125 grn JHP Speer Gold Dot.

Me?  I am packing 125 grn HyShoks .38+p in a Smith&Wesson Mod 64 2".

CCW shooting is a Martial Art and must be practiced to maintain proficiency,  so go shooting....often.

Brandon,
If 4 feet accuracy at 5 yards is all you can get.....I suspect either a bent barrel or a loose wing nut behind the trigger.    Does that thing shoot around corners?

Good Luck
