I know these have mixed feelings, but I am thinking of getting one just to throw in my pocket if I can't carry anything else.

I'm thinking of getting it in 22 mag. I don't know much about the 22 caliber. Would I be right in assuming that 22 mag has a little more bang for the buck than 22lr?

Are the barely interchangeable on these? Could I get one in 22 mag and then get a 22 long cylinder as well?

Also, does anyone know of anyplace online that has high quality 22wmr ammo in stock?
Could this gun handle hollowpoints like speer gold dots?

Thanks!

I chronographed 2, a .22LR and a magnum.

The LR would hit 800FPS, the magnum would do 940.

Not enough velocity to make a hollow point expand.

I still have the magnum, but I wouldn't cry if it changed overnight into a .22LR.

They still make the combo 22mag/22LR. It's worth the $10 extra if you ask me. Like the previous poster, if mine was a 22lr when I woke tomorrow I wouldn't sweat it.

I don't believe that these little revolvers perform any better with one brand of ammunition or another.  As long as it is reliable, that is good enough.

There is just not enough there to make an expanding bullet perform.  You can get decent penetration with a non-expanding bullet, though.  (And almost all bullets are non-expanding out of these short barrel guns).

All they are is a nitrocellulose powered ice pick.

It's the gun I throw in my pocket while I mow the lawn and wash the cars.  Few years ago a guy around here (not near me but in the city) was washing his car in his driveway and a couple of thugs walked up and said,  "Nice car" and beat the guy and took the car.  It's a shame but 'always carry' means always - even on a Sunday afternoon in your own driveway.

What's the difference between the sidewinder and the regular version with both cylinders?

I use the Speer Gold Dot 22Mag 40gr GDHP-SB in mine.

Sidewinder has the ejector. Standard cylinder you have to punch out the empty cases.

Sidewinders have a crane and swing out cylinder. The reg NAA uses a removable cylinder held in by a spring loaded cylinder pin.

What are the benefits to the swing out cylinder? Is it a faster reload?

Yes. It's larger though. oh, and it costs twice as much.

Ya, I saw it costs twice as much,
Doesn't seem like enough of a benefit to justify

They look fun and would be a "better than throwing a beer bottle" DEEEEP and LIIIIIGHT carry gun. I will pick one up someday.

What size barrel do you have?

I plan on getting the smallest, 1.125" barrel.
The Gold dots are supposedly designed specifically for 2" barrels.

1.125in barrel.
That is why i'm using that ammo. It is LOUD.
Accuracy ain't great but it'll do a head shot at 10ft.
Accuracy with 22lr is atrocious. So bad i will not carry it.

So HP have been shooting fine through it?
Do you use 22lr hp?

I bought some of the gold dot for the mag, but for 22lr what I bought was 36 grain hp.
Is that OK to shoot in these?

My mini only has the mag cylinder. I shoot both WMR and LR out of the same cylinder. NOTE: This isn't recommended.
With WMR ammo I can get a 2-3inch group at 10ft.if I do my part. With LR ammo I'm lucky to get them into a 10inch circle at 10ft. 22LR also keyholes a lot.
My suspicion is the barrel is a .223 bore for the WMR and not .222 for 22LR.
I'm cool with that as this is a deep carry piece and I never expected great accuracy.
It is fun to shoot but the blast gets tiresome. Ammo expense/difficulty to obtain also holds back a lot of shooting.
I think they're a good, solid little firearm. Buy with confidence. Just practice a LOT.

p.s. I'd like to try some snake shot in it for hiking.

I didn't even know that was possible!
I'm getting the one with both cylinders though.

Have you shot 22LR hollow points?

I couldn't find any made for short barrels...I don't know if a regular 36grain 22LR HP would be bad for these little guns
6/8/2015 8:29:02 PM EDT
[#22]
Yes, I've fired various 22LR hp's. Like I said before the accuracy was terrible. As in can't hit anything except point blank. The 22mag shoots much more accurate.
22LR fired in the Magnum cylinder bulges the case just a tiny bit. Again this is NOT recommended but can be done in a pinch.

Then you gotta find the little bittie speed loaders.
I would love to have one of these little guns just because of the great workmanship put into them.

I have one and it is my always on me gun! I work on our farm and while I keep a Smith 638 in my hip pocket (2-CCI snake shot, 3- 148gr lead WC) for snakes and close varmints while out and about, the mini is always in my hardshell glass case on the belt.

I've killed a bunch of copperheads with the regular CCI 22lr snakeshot. from it. True story, I once killed 3 copperheads with one shot! It was mating season and they were all balled up and there was sufficent penetration of the tiny pellets that all 3 received multiple hit!

I picked my "Always" gun back in the early 90s in .22LR.  Mine is keep loaded with 40 gr LRN.  I practice shooting 10 yds and can keep them all in the face of a shilouette. ie ENT gun (Eyes/Nose/Throat)  and is used a backup that is always with me.  My oldest son carry's a Magnum version for backup to his G30.  IIRC he carries the Hornady load in his.
