I found this .44 spl 3" Bulldog this morning at my LGS for $200.00 OTD. Not too hateful a price when I looked at completed auctions on GunPorker.

I figure it was produced around the mid to late 70s.

I always wanted one of the 3" versions.

Good find at a good price. I agree: the 3" ones are the best ones.
Congratulations!

I think my LGS has a couple of old 3" holsters that will fit it.

It fit in a Ruger LCR holster like it was made for it but of course the barrel pokes out the bottom.

I owned one of them back in the 70's.... It was a very decent gun for the price.     I really wish that I hadn't sold it.

Had a number of them over the years.   You got a good price.   It will fit in a 3 inch Colt Detective Special holster.

Love it! yours is exactly like mine and ironically, we paid exactly the same price!

Here's the load I'm using in mine. I tried gobs of handloads but this one gave the best balance between power and accuracy.

One of the first loads I tried was my go-to load for my other .44 Specials; 6.5 grs. of AL 20/28 over a 260 gr. cast SWC. I touched the first one off and HOLY SHIT! I thought I had detached a retina, dislodged four fingernails and sprained my wrist!

Enjoy your new find.

Please note - if your neighbors dog starts speaking to you....

...   AND you understand him....

....  Please be responsible with your .44

Yep, I figured as much. That is what is in the holster bin at my LGS. They are thumb-break holsters though.

I'm working on a OWB open-top "frankenholster" for it now. I just used the LCR holster as a pattern but made the barrel part longer.

You got a better deal than me....I paid about $290.00 out the door 18 months ago for mine, it is identical to the one you got. I'm quite happy with mine. I took the giant Pacmayers off mine & whittled out a set of walnut grips.

As Pacmayrs go these are not too bad given the long ass-end of the revolver. I'll likely get a set of walnut combat stocks for it as I'm not that fond of rubber grips. They tend to grab on everything and attract dirt.

The Franken-holster.....It's alive!

It don't look like much but it wears well.

I will take a stab and guess you are not a plastic surgeon during the day.

Seriously though, it is all about function.

Hey, don't poke fun at my handiwork.

I weighed the Bulldog and my S&W Airweight .38 and there was only a 3.6 ounce difference. I never expected that what with the only thing aluminum being the TG on the Bulldog.

I'll bet the extra weight of the rubber grips (as opposed to wood) account of a half ounce of the weight as they are right hefty.

I got in my new CA wood stocks. New old stock off of eBay. $33.00 shipped and worth every penny.

Boy what a weight difference!

CA stocks....1.4 oz.

Rubber stocks....4.4 oz.

Now the Bulldog only weighs .6oz more than my Airweight.

I took it to my range with the new stocks and fired ten rounds. While not as comfortable as with the rubber stocks it's still not near as snappy as my Airweight. Very controllable.

Looks nice with the wood grips.  Out of curiosity, is that paint on the front sight?

I have tried a lot of SD .44 special ammo for this gun over the years but the new Hornaday Critical Defense 165gr is the easiest to control I have ever tried, Midway recently had it on sale....no idea what the real terminal results are but it does not hurt my hand!

The old 3"guns are the best...

I did the same with mine, pulled the oversize rubber and installed dead tree:

I took the factory rubber off of my new Pathfinder, found some minty wood grips w/medallion for $1 at a gunshow.

Shot it and didn't like the feel.

Took them off and bought the Pachmayr compacts.

Another owner of a old 3" Bulldog.  Picked mine up used back in the late 80s.  When I'm home it is feed a steady diet of 240gr LSWC out of a Lee 2 cav mold and Speer Shotcapsules.  Front sight received some white paint then orange paint to make if really visable.  Mine is my woodsroaming gun.  IIRC CA specs where 20-21 oz for the Bulldog.

IIRC there was an article in the 1980 Gun Digest about the 44 Bulldog as a kit gun.

If I can find my copy I'll scan it.
