Hello all. I have a Ruger Super Blackhawk Bisley in .44 magnum. I love the gun and have been handloading a lot for it recently. I even killed a nice 8 point buck with it last November. With my handloads the gun will shoot sub 1 inch groups at 50 yards, however, I only achieve that level of accuracy when the gun is used as a single shot (i.e., load a round in a chamber, fire, unload, load a round in the same chamber, and fire again). When I load the entire cylinder and fired the gun as is intended, the accuracy is greatly reduced.
I would like to send the gun and/or cylinder off to a great gunsmith that could true it up. Can you guys recommend a company I could use? Thanks! |

Sounds like your cylinder throats need work which is fairly typical of Ruger SA's. I sent my Vaquero to the Cylindersmith to have the cylinder throats opened, but I think he's just about hung it up. There is however a fellow over at the Cast Boolit site that's been doing the same job and evidently is good at it. I'll see if I can run him down for you.

You said you wanted a "great gunsmith". How great do you really want him to be? I would send the gun to Hamilton Bowen and have him do his standard issue package, polish the cylinder notch leedes, set the headspace and endfloat, regulate the barrel to cylinder gap and hone and ream the cylinder necks and throats. This will be about $700. Cheap, no. Worth every last cent, most definitely. While it was there I would probably have him install a set of his sights too. |
| Here's a link to Cylinder Hones FB Page Lots of pictures of work he's done. |
