Is the Taurus Model 66, .357 a decent gun for the money? I have an old S&W Model 66-3, that I really like, but it is in like new condition. I had thought about using the Taurus for a shooter, range only, and retiring the Smith. I hear a lot about how junky Taurus is, but are they that bad? The 2 I've had in the past were OK guns. What do you think?

Thanks,
Mark

I had a 4" Taurus blued 66 and loved it. Nice trigger and accurate. Ex wife kept in divorce. I have a snub and 4" s&w model 19. Trigger is smoother on both smiths but they are well used and the Taurus was new.

Depends on how much money.  Generally decent revolvers.  Not a Smith by any means.

I've owned three Taurus handguns over the years and never had any problems.  They're not my first choice but if the price is right I'm not afraid of them.

Heavy triggers and all Taurus pistols I have handled have a weird smell.

I've owned a 66 and a 605 since 1995.  Neither has given me any trouble.  I did replace the wood grips with Hogue grips on both.  It especially made the 605 more comfortable to shoot.

I have a friend who owned a couple and I don't think he had any issues with them, if I could get into one reasonable I would do it.

Thank you for all the responses. I've narrowed it down to the Taurus M66, a Ruger G100 .357, and a S&W Model 686, not 686 plus. Haven't decided yet. I already have some expensive Range toys, and was looking for a revolver as a new range toy, but I didn't want to spend a fortune on. I rented and shot a Taurus M65 the other day. did not like the non adjustable sights, but the gun performed fine.

Thanks,
Mark

One alternative might be the Zastava revolvers that Dan's ammo is selling . They look like Smith copies and are a bargin

The best of what you listed is the S & W 686.
Every serious gun owner should have one.

I have a 85 in .38 that I got at a REALLY good price, It is heavy so I would not be a CCW gun but I am very happy with it. The trigger is heavy (I plan on replacing the spring and doing a little smoothing). It does have a issue when on double action, I pull he trigger there is a rough spot before the hammer falls. I can pull the trigger, hammer goes back but its almost like single action at that point. I plan on smoothing that up, just takes a little getting used to and is getting better with use. For the price point im happy with it and after some smoothing out it will be a great gun, built like a tank.
