I have a real nice model 10. It has a sweet trigger in it but doesn't always set the primers off. Thinking about doing some idpa with it. And need to get it firing reliably

Your hammer spring needs replacement. Hopefully the spring screw has not been shortened as well. Take off the grips, loosen the screw and replace the hammer spring.

Any local, good reputation, gunsmith should get it done for you without trouble if you dont want to fool with it. Its an easy job.

Oh yeah, maybe someone simply backed the hammer spring screw (strain screw) out. Check that it is tight....

Make sure the strain screw is tightened down all the way. Sometimes people back them off to get a "lighter" trigger but they should be tightened down all the way.

There's a huge gap between 'unreliable' and 'tightened all the way down'.

I'd bet someone loosened it WAAAAY too much.

Replacing the hammer spring is a two minute job.  In all probability someone loosened the strain screw at some point in its life.  Tighten it all the way down.

As others have stated, be sure the strain screw is screwed all the way down.

If so, look at it to see if it's been cut or ground down.

If you're serious about shooting it, you should replace both the mainspring and the trigger return spring with a new set from Wolff. It's not a difficult job.

And start reloading with Federal primers.

This is your problem . Whenever this starts to happen with one of my Smiths the first thing I check is the strain screw and sure enough it's a little loose .
Fixes the problem every time .
