Thought I'd get a knock around gun & throw it in the tractor.  Way back in 84 when I started my LEO career,  I carried a 686.  Was a solid gun  so I thought I'd pick one up.  Checked gunbroker and they are crazy expensive.   Is there anywhere that might have some leo trades that are cheaper?

Stainless is a no brainer for a knockaround gun but I'd rather have fixed sights.

personally I do not care for stainless guns. I prefer the classic blued look

Nope, the heyday of 686 police trade ins is long gone.  A few crop up occasionally, Summit is usually your best bet.  The 686 outsold the 586 by a huge margin.  Finding a blued gun is just about impossible.  Anything under $500 is a steal.

If you can find a good condition 586, expect to pay a pretty penny for it. They seem to be going up in value faster than 686s, but even the 686s are getting spendy.

Agreed.  I bought my 586 used from a fellow officer in 1986 WITH 200 rds of ammo and two speed loaders for a whopping $350.  Best firearm purchase I ever made.

My recommendation is that if it doesn't have the "M" imprinted on the inside of the frame (visible by opening the cylinder), take it to a gun shop to for the firing pin upgrade.

And expect to pay more if it has the Silhouette front sight
