The barrel on my 642 is rotated counter-clockwise from the shooter's point of view. It's easy to identify from the top and from the front (unloaded) looking down barrel. POI is about 3" to the right of POA at 10 yards.

Are the barrels righty-tighty or left-hand threaded?

Looks like it will have to be sent back to S&W for repair/replacement.

Contact S&W and they will send you a shipping label and fix it correctly.

It is over tightened.

Send it back for repair.  A couple ARF members reported cracks in the frame where the barrel screws in.  Likely from over tightening.

I just got off the phone with them. They said, especially on my S&W(its a 586 no dash), that being an older gun, the way they are assembled, that it is normal.

A barrel that is not indexed correctly is not "normal".

Maybe for Taurus, but not Smiths, especially on older guns that saw much more hand fitting than newer guns.

Ruger fixed a GP-100 with an improperly indexed barrel for me back in about '95.  Two weeks and no cost other than one way shipping.  Sorry no S&W expirience but my Ruger expirience was very satisfactory.

I have this on my 642 but i havent noticed any accuracy issues. Will it increase wear on the weapon if i dont get it fixed? Where should i look for cracks in the frame?
