I have a K frame 38 snub nose that has 5515 on the inside if the frame. Any info on this gun? I have researched and can't find anything!
Thanks Guys |

I've seen different numbers engraved on guns before. It could be from a department. Or, especially since it's 4 digits, someone could have engraved the last 4 of their SSN in case of theft. I have 2 different guns that were bought from estates with different SSNs engraved in them. I just saw a nice first year production Winchester 1897 pump with a SSN deeply engraved in the barrel.
I'd say it's one of the two of the above possibilities. Either an LE identification or someone's SSN. |

It sounds like an early model Military and Police revolver. SN would put it late 1890's, early 1900's, but without photos its hard to say.
If you're out and about this weekend stop by your local big box book store. They will almost certainly have a copy of the Standard Catalog of Smith and Weeson in stock. Thumb through it, you should be able to identify what you've got. |

That's not the serial number.
The number you posted is an assembly number, used to keep fitted parts together during assembly. Serial number will be on bottom of grip. Depending on the age of the gun will also be on the back of the cylinder and under the barrel. |
