They are very common in this area often carried as a woods gun, they are very strong and you can safely lay on them hard. In short barrel lengths the 45 Colt is a much stronger chambering than the 44 magnum in a gun which can take the pressures (which the RH easily can). |

For years I had thought about getting one for bears and cats since I often fish alone. I got a .45 LC Redhawk after a very close encounter with a moose cow.
Rugers are nowhere as pretty, nicely finished, or have as good a trigger pull as a Smith and Wesson, but forums and the loading books give the Redhawk the advantage when chambered in 45 LC due to chamber wall thickness. Mine looks like this, and this is how I carry it under a fly-fishing vest:
