| Can Gen III be fitted with one peice grips or is that a really painful thing? v/r WaltK |

The Colt Gen III SAA's have exactly the same trigger guard and back strap as the very first Colt's made in the 1870's.
Installing one-piece type grips is no more complicated then using a real gunsmith's screw driver set to remove the back strap. Note I said "real gunsmith's driver set". If you use standard screwdrivers you'll chew up the top of the screw slots and scrape the edges of the back strap holes when removing the top two screws beside the hammer. If you're going to do this yourself, buy a Brownell's Magna-Tip set of driver bits. They offer a Colt SAA-specific set of bits: http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=25458/Product/COLT-SINGLE-ACTION-SCREWDRIVER Note that you can buy the bits with a handle or just the bits. All you have to do is remove the larger screw on the bottom-front of the grip, then the two back strap screws beside the hammer then remove the back strap. The one-piece grip is slid on the back strap and replaced on the frame. These days you don't even have to buy custom made grips of real ivory. Thanks to Cowboy shooting, there's any number of companies who offer one-piece grips for the Colt made of just about anything from plastic to woods to fake ivory and pearl to real ivory. |
