Just picked up a 27 and it is missing the front sight pin. The front sight is the .300" tall size. Is replacing the pin something I can do with a pin, a punch, a wood block, and a little common sense, or are they a bitch to get in? Loctite?

Also, would it be sacreligious to replace with a fiber optic? Recommendations?

WHAT dash number 27?

If it's an older gun that pin was fitted, cut off, then ground and polished...BEFORE  the gun was blued.

If a newer gun.... some of them have easily replaced frt sights, like my 27-9.

Nice avatar..looks like a HAPPY fellow.

She is a happy pup indeed, and a very good friend!

How can I tell what dash number it is? I've actually been really curious about that.

I think its newer. Not pinned and recessed.

ETA: Aha! It's a 27-3!

The roll pin is .050". If the sight blade is already drilled simply install a new pin. I spin the roll pin in a drill and use a file to make one end have a 45 degree angle so it will enter more easily. A little 290 Loctite afterwards will help too.

Brownells sell special short punches with concave tips especially for driving out pins.  Is the stub of the old sight still in the slot?  New pin can be made from reloading die decapping pin.

I ordered a pin from Midway today. Should be here tomorrow. I can make a little punch from brass.

I have the front sight, it's all still in one piece. The pin is long gone, it came out on the previous owner and luckily he didn't lose the sight itself.

Lastly, is it a roll pin or a solid pin? The picture on midway made it look solid, but the guy who sold it to me referred to it a as a roll pin.

SHE!  Excuse me an apologize to her.

I had some sight pins in with my Armorers stuff, but long gone or not marked. I recall them as SOLID.

It's a .050" roll pin.

The one I got from Midway was solid. It fit well, but not tight enough to stay put. So I shrunk the hole in the blade itself and put a little locktite on it and its good to go.
