In those days, Colt used a type of heat bluing.
All parts were heat blued except the frame and hammer which were color case hardened.

As I recall, the bluing process involved putting the parts into a steel drum filled with a "secret" mixture of charred leather, bone meal and other ingredients.
The drums were heated in a temperature controlled oven to give the parts a deep blue color.
Colt used this process up until the 1940's.
