This is the Smith & Wesson I have The hinge is on top 32 cal rim fire. you should find Mfg. markings on top of the barrel or serial # on bottom of grip of gun.

The revolver your friend has is a newer make looks like it has auto ejection of the shells [brass] when you break action

Johnson Arms&Cycle? I'll look search some more. I have a little .32 that my wife's Grandfather gave me. It looks very similar with the exception of the trigger.

Are there any numbers or writing on the top of the barrel? If you can make out the patent numbers you can try a patent search based on that.

Looks like a Smith & Wesson .38 Single Action, 2nd Model (or possibly a copy).
