I recently saw a revolver in my Oct. 2004 issue of Guns&Ammo, it was on page #78. It stated in the article that the gun was a 396 model s&w, it is an airlite .44 special. I have not been able to find this gun or any info. on it anywhere, can anyone help me out?

I think it's discontinued.

5-shot, alluminum L-frame .44spl. pocket howitzer.

Taurus makes a comprable model if you've got to have one.

20 oz.--.45 long colt.

The 396 is still being produced. You can find the details on the S&W website -> Here

I picked up a NIB 696 a couple of weeks ago (L-frame SS 5-shot 44 Special)

Way too cool. I got one of those puppies.

I've also got a the Al/Ti 5-shot 296 Centennial version in 44spl. The recoil and muzzle flip is pretty serious so I handload a bunch of super mild 44spls.

I have the .44 Mountain Lite. Used to carry it when working private security and it is so light that you didn't even know it was there. Recoil is not that bad considering the light weight. I use 200 grain silvertips and I believe that anything over 200 grains is not recommended. I love mine.

What is the barrel length on your gun? I'm looking for something for ccw. Right now I carry a Glock 20  but I'm beginning to think its just to bulky for my needs.

The Mountain Lite has a 3 inch barrel. The front sight on mine is green fiber optic and is very handy for the ranges(close) that this weapon was designed to be used at.
