The newer ones are fine.  Avoid the old ones that say "Charco" on them.

Speer makes a 200 grain short barrel Gold Dot that is THE load for the bulldogs.

I had a bulldog pug, it never gave me any problems. I sold it, only because I wanted a S&W.

I don't like them. They seem rough and loose. I've handled some from the 70s and they are nice, tight, and smooth. But the current ones just seem rough.

I've got an older Bulldog thats been flawless.

My son got my DIL a Charter Pink Lady this year.  I fired about 3 cylinders thru it without issue (hitting my dueling tree plates at 20m in DA).  Not as smooth as my 442 but an oz or two lighter but totally functional.  Next day they put 100rds thru it again not issues.

My take on them, which is limited to the last six or seven years is that they're the other side of the coin from Taurus.  Taurus has good parts and sub-standard assembly.  Charter has sub-standard parts that they put together right.

However, if I couldn't afford a S&W and wanted a snubby revolver, I'd choose the Charter.  I'm sure they're safe to shoot, and because they're put together right, the reliability should be there.  Be sure to break it in, though.
