Anybody got one? My birthday is Oct. 7th and I was thinking about
getting it as a little gift for myself. What's some opinions? It would
be my first 9mm.

I like mine and I've had no problems with it or any Ruger Semi-Auto for that matter. The SR is easy to carry if your going the CCW route. It comes with 17 round mags, rail, and Ruger really stands behind their product. You can tell if it's had the upgrades by the Trigger. If it has a "Glock" style Trigger it's been taken care of, if not Ruger will pay the shipping both ways and get it back to you in a week along with an extra mag and a hat for the inconvenience.

Yes

They are an OK gun. They shoot well and feel nice in the hand. I personally prefer other polymer pistols, but this is really the only hi-cap 9mm plastic gun that is actually slim and feels/shoots nice. Personally if you have a local range, obviously try out everything you can. Find a gun that best suits you. If you can't, at least finger fuck your choices at the local gun shop and decide based on that.

For refrence, I believe Bud's has them for like 400.00 shipped, so I wouldnt spend a whole lot over 400.00 at the local stealer.

Thanks guys, Hows the grip? I have a first gen XD and it feels
like the grip is a mile long so it prints pretty good under my shirt.
Is the SR9 like that due to high capacity?

I loved everything about my SR9 -- except the post recall trigger.  It may have been safer in certain drop situations, but the trigger was also heavier, longer and clunkier.  I don't know if my experience is normal or not, but I was really disappointed because I liked the gun so much before the recall.  I traded it for a Beretta 92FS.

I love mine. Have a few 9mm pistols and this one is the slimmest and lightest with a full mag in. Accurate and fun to shoot with minimal recoil - screw that recall, I never even sent mine in.

+1 on the price - I got mine new for $400 OTD

Bought me an SR9 today. Can't shoot it till tuesday
I really think I'm going to like it. Now if Blackhawk
will just make a Serpa for it I'll be all set. I had to
settle for a regular old Fobus holster. I'll get to see
how Hornaday TAP ammo works on tuesday too

Which model Fobus is it? Is it made just for the SR9, or is it the HK1?

First 9mm?  Get a Glock 17.  Cheaper mags, hell and back reliability, parts available everywhere.  You are going to kick yourself the first time you need to pay $50 to send your Ruger back to the factory to get a $2 part installed.

I have 2 glocks a 23 and a 36 I didn't own a Ruger handgun so SR9 seemed like a good choice If I have to pay $50 for a $2 part then oh well I just won't buy another Ruger. My grandfather has 5 Rugers and he's never had a problem with any of them.

If you do have an issue, calling Ruger in a sensible manner will 9 times out of 10 will get your problem resolved at no charge. A lot of people trash Ruger and their CS, but they have always treated me right and most of the time mailed the part out as a freebie.

I took my SR9 to the club today and fired 400 rounds of WWB
through it. I love it. It shot real well even when I fired it as fast
as I could. It had one stovepipe when my GF was shooting it due
to "limpwristing" it. Other than that it was great. It was quite accurate
and I was as good with it as I am with my Kimber. 2 thumbs up Ruger!!!!

HK2 - thanks.

I love my SR9, it's a great shooter. I also bought it because it says "Prescott, AZ" on it and I live about 3 miles from the Ruger plant here, so it's kinda cool to have something made here in "Arizona's Hometown".

Yep. Depending on where you buy it, some gun stores also, as part of the service, handle the returns for you. That was a nice surprise - drop off gun, go on vacation, stop by on the way home from the air port, get now repaired gun.

Beats having to hand a box to the brown truck guy that screams "gun".

Love the gun.  Very slim, high capacity, actually quite accurate, grip feels great.  Only complaints I have are the trigger feels crappy when dry firing (feels fine when live firing) and I'm not a huge fan of the split trigger, but it's no big deal.

My wife picked out an sr9 for herself and i wasn't crazy about it being a cz-75b guy . I have to admit its definitely a good  shooter and a keeper . Only thing i could ask for is a smoother crisper trigger pull . Its is the only striker fired pistol i've shot and i am comparing it to my 75b so it is possible that i'm asking for a bit much . Bottom line .... i'm happy she picked it out . She surprised me with this one .

Is there any "smithy" out there doing action jobs on the SR9, like there is for the Smith M & P model.  My new smith had the worst trigger system in the world but after a action job by Dave Bowie of Bowie tactical, this is the finest shooting handgun in my arsenal.  Bet the SR9 could be made to do the same..

Has anyone tried shooting one with gloves on?  I'm concerned about how small the safety is.

I saw this thread and coincidentally found out that there is a recall out for SR9's.  Not just LCPs.  The recall is older.    Let me see if I can copy the portion of text that is relevent from the notice.  I have the document in PDF format and the file name is 042208_ruger which I guess means it came out in April of this year.  A little older but nevertheless important for those affected.

RUGER® SR9™ PRODUCT SAFETY WARNING AND RECALL NOTICE
DO NOT USE YOUR RUGER SR9 PISTOL
We have determined that some Ruger SR9 pistols manufactured between October 2007 and April 2008 can, under certain conditions, fire if dropped with their manual safeties in the "off" or "fire" position. The pistols will not fire if the manual safety is in the "on" or "safe" position.

We will retrofit all Ruger SR9 pistols starting with serial number prefix “330” (330-xxxxx) with these new parts at no charge to our customers.

In order to ensure correct fitting, the new parts must be installed at our Ruger factory in Prescott, Arizona. We will remove the old parts and install the new trigger group promptly, at no charge, and will return the pistol to you. The old parts will not be returned.

Step 1 - Contact us and provide your name, address, telephone number and SR9 serial number.
Step 2 - When we are ready to retrofit your SR9, we will send you a shipping label and shipping box with instructions so you can return your pistol to us FREE of charge.
Step 3 - We will install the new trigger group in your SR9 and return it to you FREE of charge. When we do, we also will send you a FREE extra magazine as a "thank you" for your patience and cooperation. We will make every effort to return your pistol within one week, so we will not ask you to send it to us until we are ready to receive it. We expect to begin sending shipping labels and boxes in mid-May.
Do not load or fire your pistol until it has been factory retrofitted with these new parts! If you must fire your pistol, be sure to keep the manual safety in the "on" or "safe" position except when you are actually firing.
Thank you,

Sturm, Ruger & Co., Inc.

Yeah, Ruger and their recall. I just got mine back with its free extra mag. Looks like they also changed out the mag latch.

There is a company, I'll have to find it in one of my magazines, that makes an enlarged switch for the safety for the SR9.  It looks significantly bigger.

Carter Custom makes a larger thumb safety for the SR9 i believe.

That's the company!  I saw a picture of it and it looks to be big enough to easily manipulate with gloves.

I live about 5 miles from the Prescott, AZ Ruger factory where the SR9 (and LCP) are made. Figured I'd wait out the recall rush, then take it in. Dropped it off last week, went and picked it up today. Dealing with Ruger employees face to face was great - they are all helpful and friendly.

I like the work that they did on the pistol - the trigger pull is much nicer, and the mag release feels a bit softer. Plus an extra mag is great, and the hat is a nice touch.

All in all, I like the SR9, even more so after the recall work. And now, after dealing with them, I like Ruger more as well.

Also, while I was in there today, I saw all the new brochures for their new .38 revolver, the Ruger LCR. Looks really cool - maybe it won't sting the palms as bad as an S&W Airweight.

I don't like the manual safety, under stress, it seems like it would be hard to disengage. Not a fan of the trigger safety either. The pistol does feel GREAT in the hand, though.

Look a few posts above yours.

If anyone here has detailed stripped their SR9, is the safety easy to install?

I picked up an SR9 today.
I haven't test fired it yet,
but the magazine release
is pretty difficult to actuate.
Anyone else notice this, and
is there a remedy?

I'm pretty stoked about this one.

Thanks!

Shot my brothers new SR-9 yesterday.
Liked everything except the slide release.
Had to reach in with left thumb to get enough leverage to operate the slide release.
Maybe it will  free up some with use.
Checked out another one at the gun shop and it was the same way.
Has anyone else had this experience or do I just have a weak right thumb.

My slide release was hard at first after awhile it gets easier.  It helps 2 have a mag inside also for some reason.http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/8343/001jv8xe7.jpg

My shooting buddy & I, shot my SR9 today.

About 100 rounds through it, mostly WWB stuff,
but a magazine or so of some old LRN reloads.
No malfuntions of any kind.

We were both dissappointed in the sights, though.

It started out shooting low. Then a very unusual
vertical string of about 8 rounds that wallked
equally spaced down the paper as Sootch00
held the same POA. Puzzled, I turned out on the rear
sight screw, and I noticed the sight didn't move
with it. I had to use the screw driver to pry it
up to the screw. I guess that successive recoil
pulses caused the rear sight to move down, and
stick a little more, each round. One I forced the rear
sight up, it seemed to respond appropriately
after that.

Once we had the POA adjusted to match the POI,
the groups were not very pleasing to us. Part of
it could be the excessive trigger pull, to be fair,
but we are both more than novice shooters.

I'm not thrilled with the plastic sights(It has been
pointed out to me that the sights are metal & not plastic),
but I'm still not thrilled with the trigger pull, or the groupings.

More range time is required... but so far, not good...

Johnny C!

I picked my up today. I just removed the magazine disconnect. I will shoot it on Sunday.
2/7/2009 2:51:49 PM EDT
[#44]
Ok.  I've decided it's a keeper.
We shot about 200 rounds today.
Not one function problem.

I polished the striker face & removed the
mag disconnect. I couldn't tell if the
trigger pull was any better. It still has
some creep & let off. I have tried shooting
with the pad of my index finger, but the trigger
kicks back during the reset, and it was painful
for more than a few rounds, so I have to wrap
my finger around to the first joint .

I'll wait for a lighter striker spring, as opposed to
trying to cut off the existing one.

I was able to shoot some pretty fair groups, so
I feel better about that.

Check out sootch00 on youtube for our vids on the SR9.

I guess I'll pick up some extra mags & holster next.

Later!

John

My magazines are hard as hell to load. It seems like are 4 or 5 rounds the follower will not go down any farther. then , I bang the hell out of the mags on my hand and then I can put another round in. And then it strays all over again. How are your mags?
3/8/2009 8:22:24 AM EDT
[#49]
There are two styles of mags.  The first ones had a square top "U" shaped cut out in the front, and the latest ones have a slimmer rectangle.  Some bullets are seated out a little farther than others, such as my usual practice rounds, Winchester White Box 115gr.  The longer rounds snag in the cut out sometimes, making loading a pain.  Sometimes using a loader will help.  I took a needle file and put a slight bevel on the inside by coming in through the front.  Touch up with a little cold blue and a Q-tip.  If your rounds are catching in the cut out, you should see some copper shavings on the inside of the mag cut out.

I put about 100 rounds through my SR9 today, and LOVED it.  I found it to be very accurate and the trigger felt great.
