| which one is better. aren't they essentially the same except for the front cocking serrations and the night sites? is the extra money justifiable for the tle. i am referring to the lapd swat model(civilian), if it is not the tle what is the model? what are the other features? looks pretty. |
|
The TLE is the EXACT same gun that LAPD SWAT uses, only with different markings. The difference between the TLE and a standard Custom, is that the TLE comes standard with night sights and a checkered frontstrap, and the TLE markings. Other than that, they are the same. One could easily turn a standard Custom II into a TLE, minus the markings. |
| very true hawkeye, but I think the price you would pay to get nite sights from mepro and have a smith do the checkering you would actually save money by buying the TLE. I just bought a TLE (it is in the mail as we speak) for $699 NIB and saw another advertised for $719. As well as two very lightly used ones for under $700. |
Oh, most definitely. I feel that the TLE is THE 1911 to get right now, outside of a full blown Wilson/Ed Brown etc custom job. |
| I'm shopping right now and the price difference I'm seeing between the Custom II w/ night sights and the TLE is merely $30. If you don't want night sights,I could understand opting for the Custom II. If you do want night sights, the $30 gets you the 30LPI and the name. It's $30 I'll more than happily spend sometime soon. |
| hey, rockhound. where are you shopping? my dealer has them for $850! let me know where to look. and is this really that much better than a standard 1911? i really am unfamiliar with this style gun(i shoot glocks and sigs, boyh .40 cal) and would like to hear the inside scoop on them from someone who has one. what sets this apart from a run of the mill 1911? thanks for the replies, fellas. |
| I found it on a website, but the place that advertised them was Scottsdale Gun Center in Scottsdale, Arizona. It think the Kimbers are building custom pistols straight from the factory. Ie, checkered MSH, commander hammers, skeletonized triggers, extended controls, polished feedramps, etc, etc. I learned today that Smith&Wesson makes the slides for Kimber and Dan Wesson!! |
Kimber makes their own frames and slides. They did at one time in the past use raw forgings made by S&W, but that is no longer the case. |
|
The custom II is alot of gun for the money and the TLE is even more. The added features are well worth the money when bought as a package. I have glock, sigs, and now kimbers; a stainless custom II and a tactical pro carry. If I could have only one kimber it would be a TLE stainless. |
I don't see any "real world" advantages to the full blown customs. Give me a straight up Kimber Custom or TLE and I'll use the saved cash to hand pick a select few custom parts. You will will end up saving hundreds of dollars and get one of the highest quality and reliable handguns in the world. |
Exactly why I have a TLE/RL, and a TLE. |
