I picked up an Ultra CDP II a few months back and have been using it as my carry piece.  There was a few things I wanted to change on it and was wondering if these were things I could do myself or if gunsmithing would be required.  It has the ambi safety right now and I want to switch that to the right side safety only.  I also want to change the mainspring housing to one with a magwell.  And lastly I want to put on a set of CS lasergrips.  Are these drop in mods for the most part or should I have a gunsmith do it?  Also would kimber parts be the way to go or is there aftermarket stuff that would work out better?  Thanks.

how much do you like to tinker?  are you good with tools and your hands?  are you comfortable fully disassembling your 1911?  if you answer yes to these questions, then yes it's fairly easy to replace the ambi with a strong side safety.  the only problem is that you have to fit the engagement surfaces.  as far as the mainspring housing goes, buy what you like...they can all be fitted with a little file work.  I have no experience with the laser grips...not sure if you have to adjust them to sight them, but it should be explained in the instructions.

if you answered no...it's your weapon, so I would recommend a gunsmith to install the safety (you really want to make sure this part works and is not bubba'd)...especially if you don't know how to fit it.  most 1911 parts are rarely drop in, they usually need to be massaged a little.  since the smith is already working, you should have him fit the magwell and grips.
