I may be in the market for a hk in 40-S&W, and the compacts seem a bit cheaper than the full size.

Are the compacts much snappier?

How do the Hk's shoot vs other 40 S&W pistols?  I'm looking for  very soft shooting pistol that's easy on my weak wrists, and thinking that HK's should be good because they are huge.

And my HK45 is awesome and easy on me, too.

I have tried:

DAO Walther 99
DAO Cougar
Beretta PX4
Glock 22
Glock 23 (very good).
Beretta 90Two (also very good).
Springfield XDM (very good as well).

If you have weak wrists, then I think you would appreciate the dual-captive recoil spring setup and the additional weight of the full size models.

I say go with the USP Combat or Combat competition.

I'm one of those freaks that actually shoots the compact better than the fullsize

Really? the Compacts should probably cost a bit more than a fullsize. And really they will both probably shoot about the same(diff between Comp and Fullsize). hell there isnt really much of a diff in size between the two. The HK USP COMPACTS are still rather large compact pistols. I think you would be happy with either. Just depends on if you really really need a little bit smaller gun vs a larget one.

What makes these models better for me?  I see a custom combat being offered, too.

From what I gather this will probably be a range/HD handgun or will it be a carry gun as well???

The Custom Combat has the traditional DA/SA and the Combat competition has the LEM with match trigger hybrid system. They both come with a Jet funnel that holds 16 rounds of .40 or 18 rounds of 9mm. Also, from what I understand, the jet funnel aids in faster magazine changes.  Plus, since it is the fullsize USP model the 40 cal will accept the 31 round 9mm magazines but will only hold 27 rounds of .40.

If it's also going to double as a carry weapon I say go with the USPC.

It will be range and home use, not a carry piece.

Some others have said that the USP is too high and torques more in 40 than, say, an M&P or SIg 226/229.

M&P yes, The M&P has a very low bore axis. Recoil feels light in a USP but since the bore axis is higher the gun tends to recoil up more than the M&P. But I'm not saying that follow up shots are slow. With a USPc I can make 0.22 second splits and others that are a lot better than be can do 0.18 splits.

I'm assuming "torque" refers to the leftward twist of the gun during recoil.  Correct me if I'm wrong...

I own a USPc in 40 and I have never noticed any left turning tendencies.  That said, it is a SNAPPY recoiling gun compared to a Sig or Beretta PX4 or Glock.  (My only other experiences shooting 40.)  I've altered my stance to a modern isoceles from a Weaver and altered my grip somewhat and I'm shooting the gun better than I ever have.  (I wrap my support hand index finger around the front of the trigger guard on the flat serrated section... this keeps the snap down to a minimum and has helped a LOT)

I have shot the USP fullsize in 45 and my gun is a totally different animal to shoot.  Controls obviously feel the same, but as far as recoil... yeah... totally different game.

ETA:  My GF has ridiculously weak wrists and she shoots my gun pretty damn well.  Her biggest problem is racking the slide.

I've had a full sized USP .40 for 8 years and have put thousands of rounds through it and absolutely love it.  A buddy of mine just bought a USPc .40 a couple weeks ago and since he lives in New Orleans right now (the gun's in Indiana), I got to take it out and test fire it for him.  I'd say the recoil is a touch snappier, but it's still very manageable and I shot as well with it as I do with my full size.

Dude enough.....what the hell are u trying to do...make me spend all my money.  I am kinda drooling after that description of the Custom Combat since outta the two it has trad. DA/SA.
That sounds perfect for the next handgun.....so KNOCK IT OFF

eta...i really want my next to have a jet funnel.

Actually, this is more common than one would think, IMO. I too shoot my USP .45C more accurately than my full size .45 for whatever reason. Some claim the small grip helps but I have pretty large hands, so I don't think that's an issue. But I have often shot an informal bullseye contest with my compact & did real nice with it.

I have a USP .40 full size as my duty gun and a USP Compact for off duty (also in .40). I personally like the balance/feel of the compact. While it is a slight bit snappier in the compact, I wouldn't say it's a big difference. Also, there are quite a few people that shoot the Compact better than the full size. (my dept issues full size to patrol and compacts to plain clothes) We have quite a few shooters with small hands that have difficulty shooting the full size, but they have no problems shooting my compact, it's a shame we can't issue them the gun they can actually shoot better, but that's for a different day.
