I'm looking at mine, care to elaborate on the "wierd" your referring to and maybe I can help you out?

Looking at it from the bottom, instead of running in a straight line,

This is my first HK. So all HK's have this triggerguard? Is there a

Every HK design since the USP on up have the same triggerguards, including my P2000 and HK45.

I always theorized it might to be there to help deflect a foreign object from the mag release or help with friction retention in a fitted holster.

Correct, it protects the mag release lever from unintentional activation.
