| So, I bought a P30 today...it is my first 9mm and my 5th HK and had a little problem. Out of 100rds I had 2 double feeds, one failure for the slide to lock back and 3 Stovepipes. I've never had this happen. The ammo is Remington UMC FMJ...not the best but ammo is hard to find and this is name brand ammo and should work fine. I can write off the slide not locking back because MAYBE my grip was hitting the slide release and it was shooter induced. But 3 stovepipes? I'm going to clean and lube it and try again...any input is appreciated. Hopefully this was just a bad day. |

The HK P30 needs some 124 grain "Hot" ammo to break it in, the UMC stuff is too weak for reliable operation. There is nothing wrong with that pistol. Find some Fiocchi 124 grain and run several boxes through it. Then it will cycle the lowered powered rounds. You can also work the slide back and forth a few hundred times, if you have time. |

Out of the box I had trouble with my P30L short-stroking. It would have ejection and feeding problems because the slide wasn't going back far enough. After I ran some +P+ JHP through it (maybe 30 rounds) I never had a problem again. I think that the recoil spring is super-strong and requires some serious break-in. Run some hot ammo through it and you'll be fine.
After I did that, I was able to use my lighter reloads without any trouble. Great gun. My favorite 9mm at this point and I want to get a P30 as a companion. |
| Well, I went back to the range today. I also realized that the other day I bought the gun and basically walked right back to the indoor range and started shooting. Maybe it wasn't oiled well enough...anyway, I cleaned it up and oiled it well. +P+ ammo is hard to find right now but I ran 30 rds of 124gr Federal HydraShok and 20rds of 147gr Hornady T.A.P. through it and then a 50 rd box of 124gr Winchester N.A.T.O. without a problem. Then 50rds of the 115gr Remington UMC without a problem. I'm going to agree that some hotter loads may be required to start the "break-in" process but maybe the gun wasn't oiled well the other day...anyway, it shot well today, accurate and not a single hiccup. I'm looking forward to my next trip and it's always nice to have another HK in the house. Thanks for all the input and I guess the crisis has been resolved. |
My HK USP 9 had 3 stovepipes as well in the first 100 rounds and was using WWB. After that I used nothing but Magtech so long as it was available. Magtech is loaded a bit "hotter" than WWB and American Eagle IMO. People think I'm shooting a .40 when I use Magtech .

All the HK's I have bought came packed with heavy grease in the internals so I have always given them a good cleaning prior to my first trip to the range. I have had no problems, except when using CorBon DPX which split my P30's barrel. The gun was replaced by the factory.

I agree with everyone here. I've read a lot of people having issued so I bought 300 rounds of 124gr Magtec when shooting my P30L for the first time. I took them all + 100 rounds of WWB 115gr to the range and they all shot perfectly. I've been to the range one time since then with the gun and shot 250 rounds of S&B and UMC - both 115gr - with no issues.
Work the slide back and forth manually a few hundred times and feed her some hotter stuff to loosen up the spring. From there she'll love you long time! PS - I hope you cleaned it before going out. Mine had a bunch of packing grease on the slide. |

| Bottom line, HK said it was an "anomaly". However, with my new P30 it test fired some Corbon DPX and I had one failure to eject, similar to the first barrel before it split. I'm going to measure the chamber to see if its larger than it should be. The casings are swelling when fired and can't be ejected. An anomaly fine, but this is a totally different pistol and also a different batch of cartridges. I'm not sure I can put all my faith in carrying this pistol anywhere except to the range. I'll probably trade it in and keep my USPc .40 and HK 45, they both give me total confidence. |
