I am a big guy, If I have big hands, are they comfortable as a primary carry pistol/night stand/ everyday gun? Are there any reasonable sources for mags? |

As to the hands all I can say is try before you buy. I have small hands and it is more than big enough for me and fits me like a glove. The full size is just a bit too big but the Compact is a lot bigger in the grip than the P2000SK which is too small for even my little girly hands. Regarding mags I usually buy mine from CDNN. They have weekly specials and if you buy over a certain amount the shipping is free. Sometimes it is $100, sometimes $200... so while their normal shipping is $9.99 regardless of what you buy or how many, you can skirt the shipping all together if you wait for the weekend special. You need to sign up for e-mail alerts. They also have a deal where you buy one full cap HK mag and they give you a neutered 10 round mag for free. This of course does not apply to the USPC .45 since there are no "fuller" caps than the 8 round standard mag. So, if you buy, say a Compact .40, and order 3 full cap mags at $39.99 each, you will get three full caps, free shipping, and three free 10 round mags which are great for range use. CDNN may not always have the absolute best price around but they are usually very close and when you figure in free shipping and free mags, they are pretty damned hard to beat. Also, download their on-line catalog. They have some of the best gun prices around but you must download the catalog because firearms are not listed on their web site. To buy a gun from them you need to arrange for a local FFL to have it shipped to and your local dealer will do the 4473 and NICS check when the gun comes in and you go to pick it up. Once you have a dealer in mind, call CDNN and buy the gun, have your local dealer send a copy of his FFL to CDNN (fax, e-mail, or snail-mail) and when the gun comes in you go there and pick it up paying the local dealer his transfer fee, which should not be more than $50 and that is way on the high side. More usual is a transfer fee of about $25 to $35. |

I've generally got pretty huge meat hooks. I typically look at a 1911 as perfect in size for me. I am issued a USP 40C at work, and I find the grip comfortable. It might be a touch tight at the pinky at the bottom of the extended floorplate. It is almost perfect, but I notice a fraction of an inch might be even better. As others have said, go hold one or even better, shoot one and see how it works for you. later, AJ |

Yes, and I did. I love the 1911 trigger once it is tuned but a target grade 1911 can be picky when it comes to dirt and grime. At least mine is. After 150 shots it will start hanging up on the feed ramp until the ramp is cleaned, then it is good for another 100 or so shots. The only 1911 I currently own is a tricked out PO P12 and it has been worked on by some of the finest 1911 smiths I know and it still will mis-feed when it gets dirty. As long as it is kept clean it runs great, but let it get dirty and all bets are off. I have never had my carry Compact .45 mis-feed or fail me in any way no matter how dirty it gets. And while the trigger is not as good it is more than good enough, especially since I converted it over to the 4.5 pound LEM trigger. What sold me on HKs in the first place was my son's USPC .45 which we put 1000 rounds through over two weekends and did not clean it a lick. It ran as good the last mag as it did the first. That sold me and I bought its twin and have never looked back. And it fits my hand better than any pistol I have ever tried, but fit is a personal thing so what fits me may be too big or too small for another person. |

This guy has USP Compact mags for $33.83 each. I usually buy from CDNN, but in this case this guy is significantly cheaper. CDNN is almost $40 a mag. Topgunsupply.com has them for $36 and change, as another source. www.calssportingarmory.com/Heckler_Koch_High_Capacity_Magazines_s/779.htm |
That's really what it comes down to. There's nothing wrong with the USP, and you might actually like a USP 45 in the full size. There's no way you'll think that is too small. But it sounds like you're a 1911 fan as I am, so stick with it if it works for you. later, AJ |
