I attended a shooting course this past weekend, and an instructor brought along a production model of the HK45 handgun. It has --at least this one did-- a coyote brown polymer frame, a contoured slide and bright green tritium fixed sights. The grip has the finger grooves and sort a Spiderman looking pattern on the sides. The controls are the same as the USP except for an ambidextrous slide stop/release like the P2000.

The magazines are 10 rounders and look like USP compact mags, with beefy coyote brown baseplates. The mag release is lower profile than the USP release, but still ambidextrous. The instructor who brought it showed us that it lends itself to a trigger finger release so you don't have to shift your firing grip.

It shot a two inch ten round group from ten yards in my hands. I'm sure others could do better with it.

I'll try to get some pictures up soon.

10" group at 10 yards?

You're a pretty damn good shot, that ain't a very good group though...

Was it you or the gun?

Said it before, & will say it again: grip finger grooves are vastly overrated.

They go to the extended trouble of bastardizing the grip on the full-size, yet keep the Vickers-Hawthorn version on the compact.  Hope they have room in the overstock warehouse for all the unsold full-size 45's that are going to be piling up.

Someone needs to put down the HKrack pipe.

Really? I was gfoing to buy the copact anyway for CCW to replace my USPC .45.

Endeavor to note that I wasn't bashing the compact model's grip.

Can't wait to hear what the rationale was for that finger-groove implementation/abomination.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Nonetheless, I am interested in holding one and perhaps a purchase.  However, I did prefer the earlier prototype.

Chalk me up for one of each.

Finger grooves dont bother me on a Glock, don't see why they'd be an issue here.

So long as it does what its supposed to (shoot like an HK Tac only slimmer and with a standard rail), thats ALL I care about.

The fashion police need to take a step back and calm down, its still going to one of the most badass 45's out there.

Worst case, it will be a good candidate for a grip reduction (meaning file down the finger grooves) and stiple the rest of the grip.

You make an assumption about the finger-grip criticisms being leveled.  That they only do it on the full-size & not also the compact only makes it more bizarre.  If the grooves are so damned important, then why not have it on the compact?

HK shooting itself in the foot for no reason - again.

I read on HKpro, from someone with "members access" (the pay-only accessible part of HK news), that the HK45 full size has the spidey-grips, but the compact HK45 has the older, P2000 type grips.  Halleluyah.

Anyone got a line on MSRP for the HK45 and HK45C?

Like I said.  Question is, why not both - or better yet, neither?  It's got to be that damned HKrack pipe, I'm telling you.

NO SHIT!!!! I wanted one of these bad but I wanted the second one. Oh well...I'm sure there will be many dumping their USPs for one. I'm sure I'l be able to pick up a USP for cheap.

Edited to add that I may even opt for the M&P .45. With a 14+1 capacity that's going to be hard to turn down....

1. Slimmer grip than the USP45.  The USP45's grip is no good for me and many others.  It's like holding a 4x4.  Guys with Andre the Giant hands won't care.

2.  Standard rail.  No huge deal to me, but real important to some.

3.  Improved safety configuration.  Better ergonomics for those whose thumb rides the safety.

If none of these matter to you, stick with the USP45.
