Are the Thread Protectors for USP45 Tacticals necessary for a range gun without a can?
Absolutely not. However, even though the threads are very hard and really unlikely to be damaged, I still use them on every threaded barreled pistol I have. The ones I like the best are those sold by Mark McWillis of TROS. Also another good TP are those sold by Larry of CCF. I started buying Marks before Larry changed the design of his and since I was totally happy with Marks I never tried Larry's. But there is no question taht Larry makes a very fine TP also.
I use them to keep my threads clean. When I clean, I take them, clean / degrease the threads and then put a little bit of grease on them and put the thread protector back. I figure if I keep them clean and slightly lubed I'll be less likely to damage them through use.
