Just picked up 2 HK P9S's from the AimSurp special sale. Got it home and loaded up the mags with Black Talon. As I dropped the slide forward, it locked and the round wouldn't feed. No matter what I tried, full mag, half mag or one round in the mag only, it would not feed. It appears that the round is getting caught up on the feed ramp if that is possible. It did this with both pistols. I later tried with ball ammo and it worked perfectly. I don't like the idea of a personal defense pistol that I cannot use hollowpoints or other personal defense rounds in. Is there anything I can do to fix this? If not, I will have to seriously think about selling them.

Most pistols of the P9S vintage were not optimized with JHPs in mind. My dad's older BHP runs only on ball no matter what you try. My P1 pretty much just likes ball as well. My later Sig and Berettas don't seem to care what goes in. I think the P9S (I have had a P9S for years, but I don't carry it so I just shoot ball out of it) wasn't designed in those days with a JHP bullet profile in mind. I'd try different ammo before doing anything to the gun. Try Wincheser Silvertips, they seem to feed in alot of guns that balk at other JHPs and they aren't bad performers. I'd just buy one box of every different type of JHP you can find. Hopefully you can find one that will function fine, and have decent performance. Your heart might be set on the Black Talon, but this might be one case where a different ammo might be better. I'd figure any JHP that functions 100% is better than ball, and far cheaper and easier than doing any gunsmithing that will be of a quality that I'd trust my life to. While all JHPs certainly don't perform the same, the difference may not be all that big compared to the BT's if you find one that does work. I'd run through the ammo selection before investing in anything gunsmithing wise. If you feel the need to force it to work with BTs, then I'd do some serious research on the right person to send it to for the gunsmithing. If you ruin a P9S by going "bubba", then the HK gods will smite you for sure. |
| I have not shot my P9S .45 T so I cannot comment first hand. While I have not heard of ammo feeding problems with the P9S I cannot swear as to what others are shooting. One load that comes to mind that seems very good and is especially made for feeding types of problems is the new Federal Expanding full metal jacket. It looks like a normal flat nose FMJ (like the .40 S&W) but it is really an expanding bullet. You can read up on it on Federal's web page but if you cannot get normal HPs to feed you might try some of these and see if they work. They are not that expensive and IMO would be worth a try before you start modifying your P9S. |
