The crack was in the little strip of metal behind the slide lock, and it was superficial. Later models just had that part milled off.

Here you can see the part of the frame which was milled away on the Delta Elite's to stop the frames from cracking.

The initial run of Delta's had that issue.

The 'Enhanced' Colt's had all the frames milled, a few other changes.

An easy way to tell the difference between the original and the enhanced model is by looking for the relief cut on the front grip beneath the trigger guard.

Another is that the cocking serrations on the slide are vertical on the pre-Enhanced, and slanted on the Enhanced.

Pre-Enhanced (with the rail milled above the slide stop)

The 2009's look like the old Delta's, but have the frame milled away near the slide stop.

I've got a pre-enhanced stainless DE and it also has the milled away notch. I'd say it was made about mid-to-late 1990.

Also it doesn't have the notch below the trigger guard.

And the new Delta grips suck compared to the originals.

Mine has the vertical slide serrations, but the frame is milled away, and the trigger guard is the old style.

I bought it used, and it has seen a lot of use.  It is still going strong.

Blue steel, just like it ought to be.
