I read the other post and also followed the links tacked above. I managed to surf for a few hours. I'm looking at buying a used series 70 Colt MkIV .45 serial #: 70B016XXX I only got a quick look at it and I'm going to see it again next week. It was blued and had checkered wood grips. I don't know how to rate the gun, but there is some wear on the side of the slide, and the mag release and a couple of other areas had some surface rust. The guy seems to think it is worth a lot but let slip (?) that he bought it used 15 yrs ago for $400. He seems to need the money so I think there is room for bargaining. I have a new SS Colt MkIV 80 series but I've always wanted a blued Colt .45. I am looking for a shooting pistol and I'm not interested in collecting. I am a complete novice with Colt pistols. I'll get a better look at it next week. What should I look for other than getting a better look at the finish? Anyone know when the pistol was manufactured based on the SN? I couldn't find any tables with the latter info. Any other advice would be much appreciated. Thanks. |

If you are going to buy, you definitely have room to negotiate the price if he has it on the high side. Just keep pointing out the rust, and if he's placing value on the age, that the wear on the slide is original blue that's gone. If that doesn't work out, you might want to consider a new 1991. Easier on the wallet, still a Colt, and that beautiful blue and rosewood combo look. |
Thanks for the input. I talked to the guy again today and I'm seeing the pistol again on Monday. I downloaded some info from one of the tacked links on the 1911 forum on what/where to look for wear, etc. I just casually mentioned that the pistol was made in 1981 and he was surprised. He must have thought it was a real collectible. But as you point out, condition is everything. I'm looking for a shooter for the right price but I like buying guns new so I may end up going for the 1991. Thanks. |
