I have a chance to buy a Colt 1911 that was made in 1918.  The pistol looks like a weapon that has seen combat (ruff) but still shoots well.  The serial number is 2686### and "MODEL OF 1911 U.S. ARMY" appears on the slide.

I have no idea what the pistol is worth.  What do you guys think is a fair price for it?

If the finish is very rough, but the weapon is 100% original, it's worth at least $800 at a bare minimum, possibly hundreds more (depending on finish). If the weapon itself is rough, then that depends on the condition (pitting, if so how badly, etc).

The pistol is 100% original.  The finish is poor but it has no pitting or anything like that.  The screws for the grip and a bit chew from using too small of a screw driver.  The original wood grips are a little warn from combat (and 90 years).  But other than that it is pretty nice.

The guy wants $400.  Sounds like I should buy it.
