Hey guys, new to the 1911 world. I Just got my first 1911 and took it to the range the other day. 150 rounds of wwb and it rant like a champ, no malfunctions whatsoever. I was wondering what/ where to get the nessisary (spelling) spare parts in case something goes wrong. So far the only thing ive picked up is a wilson 17lb recoil spring. What else do i need?
Also what kind of mags are you guys running?

Thanks.

I have a Combat Elite from the mid-nineties.  I use Colt and Chip McCormick mags.  I've never had to replace any parts, but added some aftermarket parts...  hammer, sear, extended safety, Group Gripper/full-length guide rod, etc.  Just need to put in a nicer trigger and I'll be completely happy.

Pick up a copy of Jerry Kuhnhausen's "The Colt .45, A Shop Manual" and you'll learn a lot about this fine firearm.

Nice pistol!

Good shooting,

Mine is a mid 90's Combat Elite too...

I had trigger job done on mine, and had a McCormick carbon fiber trigger put in (IIRC, STI sells those under their name now ). I run a Colt .22 conversion on it most of the time. I do have some other options when it's time for fullsize ammo:

Magazine-wise, I like the Wilson Combat 47DCB for carry, particularly for the low profile steel basepad.  When I'm carrying the New Agent, I do use the factory mag and a Wilson for reload. I have a mix of Wilson, McCormick and Colt factory mags of various capacities, as well as some USGI.

Cool, thanks guys. Mine came with a full length guide rod, im not sure it give the gun that much more advantage, its a pain to take apart also. If i wanted could i just run the usgi style recoil spring system? I bought a wilson mag and it works great but on the last round when my slide locks back its almost impossible to release the slide on the empty mag unlike the factory ones. Any similar problems?

Guide rod: Yes, you can run a USGI guide rod and recoil spring plug. They'll drop in, no problem. I'm not sure if the spring needs to be replaced. Factory standard is a 16 Lb spring.

Mag: Easy fix: remove the magazine and inspect the chamber to ensure it is empty, before letting the slide go forward on an empty chamber. Savvy 1911 owners will not let their pistol's slide go forward by just using the slide release. Without a mag, hold the slide like a slingshot, tug back enough to get past the slide release's hold, and then ride the slide home.

From a safety stand point, you should remove the mag just to ensure it is empty, and then cycle the slide a few times prior to putting it away, when you store it unloaded.

If you want to hand it to someone else, remove the mag, lock the slide back and inspect the empty chamber first.
