Does anyone know of threaded barrels or barrels long enough to be threaded for the Colt M1911 or M1991?

I would prefer barrels for the government models (5" stock), but i wondered if you put a 5" barrel on a regular 4 1/4" gun would it work? maybe thread it?

A threaded Colt Government Model would be Niiice..... Any ideas?

Yes, they are available. Esp. bull barrels, made for compensators. You could use a 5" in a Commander slide, if you wanted. 1911s are not great candidates for suppression, though.

There are plenty of threaded barrels available for the 5" guns.  Brownells has them, and they are intended for comps, as mentioned by Combat_Jack.  Most are of exceptional quality, and will be expensive.  Check their website:

Also, you can get much cheaper barrels from F.A.C.  They sell them with mock suppresors too, if you're into that.  Here's their website:

I've got one of the FAC barrels.

Works good amazingly. Perfect drop in fit with my series 80 1991A1

Well, i'm looking to get a suppressor made for a .45......... but first ill need a pistol...

I figured a M1991A1 would be a sweet gun to do it with.

I couldn't find any M1911 or M1991 barrels on FAC?

Also, are M1991 and M1911 barrels interchangeable?

Yes the barrels are interchangeable.  If you want to suppress a .45 though, get a USP.  They run better.

NOT ALWAYS

I've had problems with some series 70 barrels on my series 80.

YMMV....but all barrels are not gonna drop in.

Also, there are some differences with some of the Colt 1911s.  Gold Cups and any enhanced models have amuch narrower barrel hood.

FACs site is difficult to navigate, but they are there.  Try this:

By that I mean there is no design difference, although each barrel should be fit and chacked by a 'smith.

Well, as Hobbs5624 stated, there are some minor design differences. I'm not trying to be anal or anything, but i've had more than one barrel come through my hands that didn't work.

But yes, it never hurts to have a smith check it out

The question is were those differences intentional, or are they from the machining process.  1911's have been produced for what... 94 years.  I am sure that tolerances have varied slightly, although the design has changed little.  Sorry I didn't read that close enough, though.

Most barrels for the 1911 are oversized and meant to be final fitted by a gunsmith.  Due to manufacturing tolerences each pistol is slightly different. There are drop-in barrels available, but they might require slight fitting also. Just because it functions doesn't mean its properly locking up. As I understand it, this causes premature wear and can be unsafe, also degrades accuracy. That doesn't mean barrels won't interchange, just that they need to be checked in all pistols you want to use them in.

As far as 1911 vs HK with the HK you can use the sights easier and it comes with a threaded barrel.

)not true.... unless its the USP Tactical its not threaded at all. If you purchase a USP it is a bit more than the M1991/M1911 and if you get the USP Tactical your getting around $1k for a pistol.

Unless anyone has a cheap idea for a H&K USP .45 Tactical, Which would be cool, I think i'll consider a M1911/M1991 or a cheap threaded glock........................... (but i'd have to buy subsonic 9mm ammo then,
