Does anyone know of a website that I can use to date a 38 super Colt? I put one on layaway yesterday and would like to know how old it is. I forgot to get the serial number but I will get it when I go back this weekend to make a payment. It appears to be like new, it says on the slide "series 70" 38 super, or maybe it was super 38? It's a blued gun, appears to be all original. The grips are a light brown/tan color with the Colt medallion and look like plastic? It has the original box and paperwork, the box looks old and is kind of a small 2 pc affair that the gun fits in snug. The sales guy said the box matches the gun but I forgot to check that detail myself as it was already put away after we did the paperwork. That is something else I will verify this weekend. My guess is its probably 1980's vintage?
It was priced at $950 firm. I was actually there to try and sell a Glock 10mm I had that I never used. I paid $430 for that Glock, they offfered 300 which I turned down. After browsing the store racks I was about to leave with the Glock and list it on Gunbroker when something caught my eye. A 1911 sitting in an old box in one of the display cases. Oddly, the display case it was in normally has handguns that are tribute type pieces, you know, the "franklin mint" type ones that are all engraved like you see advertised in the magazines. I have zero interest in those types of guns so I rarely check that display case in detail. I don't know what drew me to look in it this time but I'm glad I did. I ended up using the Glock as a down payment for the 300 they offered, so I took a $130 hit on that. That being said, I figure that puts me into this 38 super for $1080. Trying to put a value on it, I checked Gunbroker and it seems I'm in the ballpark on what I will have into it. Opinions? |

Thanks for the link! I had that one a few years ago and lost it when my computer crashed, forgot all about it. I had done a google search and came up with nothing. Based on that list, I think I'll be in the 1970's, the ones listed that begin with 70Sxxxxx as the slide on this one is marked series 70. I assume that would'nt be on there prior to the series 80 guns. |
