I'm in the process of purchasing a almost NIB Service Model Ace built in 1981.  Any advice?  How do they run?  Good weapons?  I've wanted one since I was a kid so I'm gonna buy it anyway, but just interested in any advice.  Thanks guys.

mine likes the mini mags in order to cycle. if you use weak 22s the slide is sluggish.  Runs fine on stouter 22s

I run my early 80's Colt Conversion unit with Fed AutoMatch, but actually get better accuracy from bulk Remington GoldenBullets.

I've been running a 16.5lb Wolff variable rate recoil spring in mine, with no problems.

I had replaced it, as I found that the the original spring was too weak, after I noticed the pin holding the rear sight on was walking out.

FACTORY RECOIL SPRING NOTES

1. Factory rating for super .38 & 9mm is 14 Lbs.

2. Factory rating in .40 S&W is 19 Lbs.

3. Factory rating for the Colt .38 Spl. Midrange is 14 Lbs.

4. Factory rating for the Colt Ace .22 conversion is 14 Lbs.

Sweet, I have a Colt conversion kit. Any ammo I've used has worked reliably. CCI blazer, Fed bulk pack, Automatch and minimags. It's a blast and every bit as accurate as my MKII. I liked it so much I had a local member/smith build a Caspian lower.
CDNN has the cheapest mags I've found;

lube the floating chamber with synthetic motor oil, its the best oil found to keep the chamber free.

I have an '82 vintage Service Model Ace and can offer the following:

1) its not very accurate compared to "regular" .22lr autoloaders––like a Ruger Mk III. It's allged that they can be

2) I was advised to use high velocity, copper coated ammo.  Federal bulk pack fills the bill.  I can easily go 500 rds between cleaning.

3) magazines can be hard to find and expensivemwhen you find them

4) miscellaneous loose parts––extactor, fp, ejector, floating chamber––are occasionally offered on gunbroker.com and might be worth considering

All-in-all its a nice pistol but a little bit of a novelty, rather than an everyday shooter.  I paid $1000 for mine a couple of years ago in 95% shape, with the box etc.
