Got to handle a Diamondback recently.  Wasn't aware the gun existed.  Wow!  Thought it was a Python at first.  Got a bad case of "do want" now.  I'd like to hear from owners about likes, dislike, duribility, etc.  Pics would be nice too.

Many consider the Diamondback as the Cadillac of .38 special revolvers. I have a 2-1/2" and a 4" version (Although sadly, neither have the original grips) and they both are great shooters. They also made them in .22LR and .22Mag as well. I think the .2LR version would make a perfect plinker/trail gun.

Here are my two:

The Diamondback was a premium grade Colt revolver.
It looks like a miniature Python and the barrel was made on Python machinery, but it's not the same quality as a Python, nor was it tuned or blued like the Python.
What the Diamondback really is is a Detective Special with a Python type barrel and adjustable sights.

The Diamondback was available in barrels of 2 1/2", 4", and 6", in .22LR, and .38 Special.
They were available in blue, bright nickel, and a few in satin electroless nickel, also known as "Coltguard".
These are invariably very accurate revolvers and the quality is very high.
These are probably the Cadillac of .22 DA revolvers.

What brand are those grips on the left and do they make them for any other manufacture's revolvers?

Those are Pachmayr grips and I don't think they offer that particular set of grips anymore. Pachmayr is now owned by Lyman and I checked their website, but I didn't see these grips in their lineup.

Dang it, I'd really like a set for my GP100.

Diamondbacks are quickly becoming as expensive as the Pythons. Actually there were far fewer produced than Pythons. Pythons were made back in the mid '50's and Diamondbacks were started in the mid 60's so there aren't near so many out there.

My brother died right before Christmas of last year. He left me some of his Colt pieces. One of which is this Diamondback. Finest trigger I have EVER seen on any gun.

The Diamondback is a great revolver. I have owned several Pythons over the years and see them for sale regularly. But I rarely see a Diamond back for sale. When I do, they go for 800 to 1000.

I do miss the Colt revolvers and the Diamondback was very special.

It's close to but no Python.

The one I saw was a 6 inch, blued, 22, LNIB condition.  I was very surprised how close it was to my Python in the way if felt in my hand.  It's might have been a little bit heavier.  Beautiful bluing, great wood, and a fine trigger.    Damn, getting over this is going to be expensive!

I love my 4" Diamondback .22. It's one gun that I won't be selling EVER.
