i've been wanting a P1 since i first started seeing them in the shotgun news a few yrs back. today i went on a short trip to check out gun stores and pawn shops a few counties over and stumbled on a shop that had 10 in stock. they were asking $369 plus tax for them with holster, spare mag, and cleaning kit( this kit is not for a pistol looks like for a G3 or similar rifle)

i had brought along two ruger pistols just incase i found something i had to have and couldn't afford outright. i didn't want to drop any cash on a pistol so i asked if they would swap for my p94 even. they agreed and also agreed to me taking all 10 out and picking the one i wanted. it was about the best time i've had choosing a gun. i'm not versed on dates and codes or wich yrs might bring more $ on these, so i found the best condition, most original in appearance they had. plus the best holster, spare mag, and however wrong cleaning kit.

since they are all post war i'm guessing that no matter what yr i got value would be nearly the same. this one is dated 3/79 , also the year i was born. most of the "nice" looking pistols looked re-parked with no red f, or white s. the worse looking ones didn't look parked at all but were very worn. the one i chose has the white s and red f very clearly marked and it was the only one with "white dot sights".

other marking are:
left side- walther p1 kal 9mm   3/79 followed by a 4 point star
6 digit serial # on frame matcing 3 digit on slide
bw on trigger gaurd

right side- w989 on frame fallowed by what looks like 2 very small eagles

same small eagle on barrel lug

and then pw arms redmond wa on front strap of grip

i am very happy to have found it and i can't wait to shoot it. it isn't as practical as my p94 but i have a p95 that is. i think it compliments my stg58 very well ,and i really like the looks of it.

before i start blasting with this pistol, is there anything i should know about? are all 9mm loads safe, hp's etc. and does anyone have a link to a disassembly guide? what about value?

what do ya'll think.

P38 page on surplusrifle.com works fine for takedown. Mine works just fine with WWB FMJ, but I have not tried any HP ammo. They were designed for FMJ so I expect it may have problems with at least some of the HP ammo out there.

I got mine at Gander Mountain, where I also picked up my Sistema 1911. I, like you, got to go through the half dozen Sistemas to pick mine out.

There are deals to be found at Gander amongst the high priced stuff.

thanks for the link.

yours look great too.

i was looking through back issues of shotgun news and saw where p1's were going for $249 a yr aga + $20 hand select + $20 shipping + and then transfer fee. i am even more pleased with my trade now. i was hoping to sell my p94 for $300 but had no takers.

The only "watch-outs" for the P1 are:
1.  It was designed for STANDARD 9mm ammo.  NO HOT STUFF.
Shooting hot ammo can cause cracked and broken slides and frames, and fast wear of the locking system.
You can shoot STANDARD hollow point ammo, but be prepared to experiment to find a brand/type your specific gun "likes".

2. NO "extra power" recoil springs.
While these may "pad" the gun when shooting hot ammo, the stronger spring also slams the slide CLOSED with greater force.
This will literally hammer the front of the frame off, cracking it through the take-down lever hole.

3. Clean and lubricate the gun AND magazines.
Many of these haven't been cleaned or lubed in many years, and a lot of P1 problems are cured by just a clean and lube.

4.  Until you've shot it a bit and know what it'll do, guard your face and eyes.
The Walther ejects to the LEFT, and some are infamous for throwing brass right in your face.

Enjoy.  These Walther P1's are the best deal to come along in many years.
Before the current import wave, Walther P-38/P1 pistols were selling for over $500. AND UP.

i'm learning a lot about p1's.

it has been arsenal redone in 89 and 79 is the updated slides date. but it seems to be a fine pistol. it doesn't have the reinforcement pin but since i didn't know they existed i'm not too down about it. lots of good info here

it's a good shooter, i took it out this afternoon and put about 50 rnds of wwb through it with no problems. i just broke it down to clean it and that was pretty easy. all in all i'm happy.

Your going to hate me for telling you this. But Simpsons LTD in Galseburg Il. has them advertised on their web site for $195. I bought two of them and they are very minty, although I did get to hand pick mine out a few tubs of them.

naw i'm not a hater

a fella over at the p38 forum told me about them allready. i don't feel bad because i got into mine for no $, essentially. i was wanting $300 for my ruger and the shop was selling p1's for $369. however high their prices are it still was easier for me to trade.

Hi!

This cleaning kit is the standard one for the Bundeswehr, all state polices, the BGS (now Bundespolizei), the custom and several DoJ.

I was/is used for cleaning of all 9mm service pistols, all 9mm submachine guns, G1, G3 and MG3.

The P1 is a high quality pistol and as the current imports will be sold off, the P1 will gain value again. There are still a few  issued to the Bundeswehr but now it is more and more replaced by  the P8, the HK USP.

The cleaning kit is indeed the standard cleaning kit for the MG, G3, Uzi , and P1. The wicks that were issued consisted of several strings. In 9mm you used the issued bunch, when you used it for the MG3 or G3, two strings were removed.

The P1 was shot with standard Nato 9mm, the same as used in the UZI. That stuff was a little bit stiffer loaded than standard pressure ammo. I remember when I could shoot issued ammo for free, lots of it. Even still got a trophy shot with the P1 from a military and police state championship back in my days.

If this is not a good time to show off....

thanks for the replies and the pics! i really like my p1 even if it's not the updated frame. it's not my "defensive pistol", don't get me wrong i see the design as more than capable, and for the current $ it's hard to beat.

The only units still equipped with the P1 are the Wachbataillon and the Feldjaeger. The Feldjaeger are equipped with the P8 for normal duty (with the P7, but only if they were in the plain clothess small numbered personal security team), and with the P1 if they are serving as honor guards/escorts with white leather gear.
There are rumors that right now the paramedic units were the last normal units who get the P8.

I would guess, the Bundeswehr has all in all circa 5,000 P1 in stock.
Last Saturday there was a competition shooting for guests of the 7./Wachbatallion here in Berlin, they had all sorts of P1 you want. Blued or parkerized, with or without hexpin.

I got the exact same cleaning kit with my VZ-58 rifle. From TGI guns. Curious.

Nice pistols guys, I've been looking at getting an affordable P1 too. Just for plinkin.
