I recently took my P22 to the range to have the Slide fracture after only 6 shots. It cracked all the way threw the walther banner in the front of the weapon. Walther did replace the weapon free of charge even though it was not under warrenty(took 3 months). I have found other cases of this same fracture with the P22 on other websites and jus wanted to drop the warning to you all with small children firing this weapon. I sold the new P22 unfired as I just dont tust the gun anymore. PLesae be carefu out there and happy shooting. There was no barrel dammage nor was there feed ramp dammage but the slide rails were pretty messed up. They were not messed up b4 I went to the range that day. I had about 600 rounds threw the gun when it broke and it was a 5" model. S&W did replace the gun after about 3 months of waiting. They are not issuing a recall at this time. Apparently they are waiting for someone to get hurt. I am avoiding all S&W and Walther products due to this event and the way they treated it when I was dealing with them. I have also had a .357 revolver blow up on me when I was younger that S&W replaced even though it was not under warrenty either due to manufacturing error. http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y1/wlpitbull/P1010020.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y1/wlpitbull/P1010019.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y1/wlpitbull/P1010018.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y1/wlpitbull/P1010015.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y1/wlpitbull/P1010014.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y1/wlpitbull/P1010012.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y1/wlpitbull/P1010011.jpg |
That sucks, but we had one for years. My kid put thousands of rounds through it with no problems. |

Gotta remember that those are MIM ( molded injection metal ) i think thats right, and they are not machined or cast slides, so they are very weak, especially when it comes to taking them apart cause the barrels are fixed, i work for a indoor shooting range/FFL and we have had a couple of P22s in the rental case, and at least one of them has cracked in that way, i just sent them back to S&W for repair and they sent it back with a brand new slide... S&W has a service repair plan for dealers just have your local FFL send it back to S&W it shouldnt cost the FFL anything cause S&W sends a call tag and they should replace it for you... just my $.02 |

Check out my post. Almost same crack. ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=5&f=4&t=55960 |
So was it 6 shots or 600 rds? They replaced your firearm. Why are you unhappy? Why should they issue a recall? Why do you think they want someone to get hurt? hinking.gif |

1. I had around 600 rounds threw the pistol when it broke. The 6 round where all I had fired on that range trip. 2. I am unhappy for 1 the guns slide freaking cracked, the slide man not some a trigger bar a sear spring a mag catch the freaking slide that should be one of the strongest parts of the firearm due to the extream stress put on it during the cycling of the action while firing the weapon. And the made it out of pot metal come on whats not to be mad about there. They also took way to long to get me a new gun. Not like they didnt have plently to choose from. 3. This is not an one time occurance it has happend numerous times. Many failures= recall. I dont think they want someone to get hurt it is just seems that what it takes to get somethings fixed in this world. My reason for this post is to inform people of a problem that the P22 has. If you choose to ignore the problem thats your right. If you have a P22 I wish nothing but luck to you with it and I hope it preforms flawlessly for you. I am not in this for a pissing contest or to be questioned on the way I view this. Go ahead and call walther america and ask if there has been any P22 slide fractures, When I called they said mine was the first one but once I told them i had already researched the issue and found numerous accounts of P22 slide failures that they had already replace they changed their story. Not the kinda company i want to deal with. I will no longer own a Smith product due to this. |

You know this seems to happen mostly with the 5 in models with the comp on the end. The original poster and the other one above both have the compensated model for example. Is it a flaw with that configuration mabey? I do have to agree though that if my non-compensated model did that I would sell it the day after receiving it back from S&W. |

Well hell, I just picked up a short-barreled P22. I hope they did fix the problem and that the OP (and me) doesn't have any more problems with it. Thanks for the warning, even if I didn't notice until too late. At least now if it happens to me I'll know that this has happened before. |
|
I have seen a couple of different 5" models crack the same way. I have yet to see one of the short models crack. Must be that there is not enough clearance between the slide and the compensator. I just emailed walther and asked if I could get 3 of their new extractors (supposed to stop brass from being thrown back at the shooter according to RFC.com) for my pistol and 2 others that belong to my dad. "you'll have to send them in for warranty work." No thanks, I will just not purchase anymore S&W or Walther products. Ruger makes a great pistol and I can get parts anywhere for them. |

we have a 5" two tone P22 that has between 1200-1500 rds of Fed value pack, Rem value pack and CCI mini mags through it. Never a problem except an occasional feed hiccup when it gets nasty. Nor have I heard that this is a widespread problem. sorry for your bad luck OP |
| I don't think this is something you should be bumping to keep it in everyone's face. Though, I just bought a P22 and this doesnt change my views of it or S&W at all. I think it is well understood that the P22 is not a perfect gun; it's inexpensive and with a little elbow grease can be made into a great little plinker! I am not a S&W fan by any means, i just think you're trying to bash them as opposed to expressing your displeasure with the product. They replaced your gun which was out of warranty. They could've told you "Sorry, it's out of warranty. Tough luck" and you couldn't have done a thing about it. I may have gotten impatient in your situation but, if they're replacing my gun which is just a plinker anyway, no big deal. If it was a carry piece that's a whole different story. |

ag04blast Wondering how many rounds thru that p 22 when it cracked? 10,000 plus. It has been flawless and well cleaned and maintained. I had seen the other peoples crack before so I always inspected the slide after shooting. I know it has had a lot of rounds through it but I still do not expect the slide to have a failure like this, cracking to two places. The way the cracks are I am glad I did not get hurt. |
