I have been looking into something in the 44 magnum family.  I have been looking at the taurus model 44.  Does anyone in here have one?  How does it shoot?  I considered the 629, but the taurus come compensated and a bit less on the price tag.  Also,  how much does the 6" barrel improve accuracy / velocity over the 4" barrel?

I had a Taurus Tracker .44 Mag with the 4" barrell and absolutely loved it.  If it hadn't been for buying a home and needing to have some cash on hand I would still have it.  It shot accurately and did not have as much recoil as you would think a 44 would have.  The only downside is that it is too big for concealed carry.

<edit>

The Ribber grips on the Tracker may feel odd at first but they are a pleasure to have when firing; they help absorb the recoil (along with the ported barrell) and are quite comfortable.

I've had two of them, both stainless 4" guns.  Both were trouble free, and shot very well.  They are finished off well, but the lockup is nowhere near as solid as a 629, of which I've owned several of.  For the price, I think they are worth every penny.  They advertise them as being ported.  They are not!  The last one inch of barrel is actually an expansion chamber, and the ports act as exhaust ports for the expansion chamber, which is much more effective than a barrel that is merely ported.  So in essence, you are getting a compensated revolver, rather than merely a ported one.  The only drawback, if there is one, is that you loose one inch of barrel length.  So in actuality, if you buy one with a 4-inch barrel, you are actually only getting three inches of rifled bore.  I never let that bother me, as I'm a big fan of 3-inch Model 629's.

I have an 8" M44. It is very accurate and is built quite sturdy.
Great gun for the money.
