I've heard them being listed as low as $400, but I haven't seen one at a fun store yet.

If I saw one for $400, it wouldn't be there long!

The NRA's magazine has an article.  They love it.  It got a great review.

Was at the local toy store yesterday, they had like 4 calls for this in the hour I was there. But the owner said that he could not get them anywhere.

They'll probably be like the Springfield XDs when they hit the market.  Demand exceeded supply by a wide margin for a while.

My brother's review.....

I was at the NRA range after work this afternoon and Had an opportunity to handle a new for 2006 Taurus 1911 pistol.  A Taurus factory rep was there to show off their new 1911 pistol.    Hands down IMO its the 'best buy" in 1911 pistols!!

The stainless gun I handled is priced at only $600!! and is loaded with custom features you normally find in 'near luxury' guns like Kimber and Springfield Armory.

I'm pretty well jaded but for the money this gun impressed me--

For one thing, it comes with some of the best fixed combat sights--Heinie "Straight Eights"

Also, it has 30 lpi checkering on the frontstrap, trigger guard and mainspring housing--something usually found only with Les Baer ,Rock River or Wilson.

Other goodies include a beavertail safety, ambidextrous safety, polished feedramp and barrel throat, lowered and flared ejection port, skeleton hammer, target trigger--its loaded!!

I remember when 'ya had to spend $500 for a basic Colt Gov't model and then another $1,000 on parts and labor to get it right and 100% reliable with hollow point ammo. At $600 retail this gun shines.  My only gripe is the trigger--its 'lawyer heavy" at what feels like 6 or 7 pounds---I like a basic 1911 to have a 4 to 4.5 pound trigger--no problem for a skilled pistolsmith.

Given where Taurus is from, it wouldn't suprise me if the SF and Taurus guns are made in the same place (Springfield GI & Milspec .45s are imported from Brazil)...

Mr Heinie has posted on 1911forums.com
The heinie sights were originally designed for the 24/7, they're kinda just thrown on the 1911 pistol. They're good, but not as good as true heinies. He said he'd start working on aftermarket ones for the taurus when he gets a chance.

This is still going to be my first 1911. For the price it can't be beat.

We got one into the store.  $450  I'm not really that impressed.  First of all, the trigger guard has a nice gouge in it.  I think I will tell the manager so we can send it back.  Second, I don't really see it as being much better than the rest.  It soesn't seem as nice as the basic model Kimber and only somewhat better than the SA GI .45.  I figure it's probably somehwere in between the two.  Being that the Kimber is about $689 and the GI is about $479, I would put it's relative value at about $550.

I think Taurus payed the NRA for that article.  With all the production custom 1911's out there, this thing really isn't as good as they say it is.  It also has a really ugly looking lock built into the hammer.

To sum it up, it's a very nice pistol, for a Taurus.

Let me see if I have this straight.  You have a $550- gun for $450-.  With a lifetime warranty.  And the problem is

The hammer?  ummmm

My guess on the issue at hand?  Elitism.

I've never had an issue with Taurus, owning four of them currently.

I've played with the PT1911.  Fit and finish were just fine.  I don't expect gold plating for $500, I expect a functional, reliable firearm... which it is.

I've had mine for about a month now, give or take.  I've put close to 400 rounds through it without issue.  It feeds JHP, LWSC and ball from Wilson, Novak, CMC and generic mags just fine.

Elitist?  Maybe.  I met a guy who told me his Hi-Point 9mm was the most fantastic pistol he had ever owned, too.

I had a buddy who bought a PT111 in 1999.  The thing went tits up and he used that lifetime warranty.  It was gone for two months and came back still broken.  Took another month to get that fixed.  I shot it and was unimpressed.  I hated the trigger pull due to it's extreme length.  All the current poly Taurus pistols have a similar trigger.

We recently sent a Taurus revolver back to the factory becasue the cylinder would free-spin when it's supposed to be locked up in the frame.  So far the only Taurus I have been impressed with is the Cowboy action gun which has the tightest cylinder I have seen.  Thing doesn't wiggle a bit.

Taurus is pretty good for the money, and they are getting better, but I would prefer to save up a bit extra and buy a better gun.

We got one at my work and for the money it seems like a nice pistol.  My only gripes are that the slide and frame fit is pretty loose (although that might be a good thing ) and then the Taurus roll mark.  it is huge and uglier than sin. The sights also suck, Dot on Dot is probably the slowest sight to use, it confuses the eye.  The sights on the one at my store is not even close to being straight...I hope they are not zeroed because they are way off the center line. Other wise, I was pretty impressed, and we are selling them for $450.  The throat and feedramp are mirror polished and the safety is very positive, unlike SWs.  I think it is worth a shot...Although it is still a Taurus.

Does anyone know if standard 1911 sights will work for it?

sign me uo for a blued commander size in .40 I am all over that when it comes out. I have read many great reviews on other forums, like THR and others. I can't wait, which is gonna be the hard part, no telling how long it will be before they come out with production models in the commander size and the .40 and 9mm, and .38 super models, it will probally be a while.

I fondled one at the local fun store and my only complaint with it is the goofy looking hammer, everything else, I liked. Trigger pull was a bit long, but it was smooth, with no creep; sights are good as well and the checkering was excellent; though I am still trying to figure out why the checkering on the bottom of the trigger guard.

the PT1911 will give SA a run for their money; such a nicely loaded pistol at a decent price. Hard to ignore.

Is it just me or do they always have a buddy who...?  It's never their gun that fails always some dude or my buddy.  Don't get me wrong, story may be true, but it just always seems to be to someone's buddy.

Anyone here own the Taurus 1911 and hate it?  Break it?  Warranty it?  Time will tell.  The owners don't tell.  Just their buddies.

I went to the range on Sunday with a friend who just got his matte blued Taurus 1911 last week. After a minor sight adjustment (it was grouping a little right of the target in both our hands) we had a ball with that gun. No jams of any sort. I would estimate the trigger pull to be a CRISP 5 pounds. Fit and finish were nice, and I don't mean "nice for the money". This pistol perfomed well right out of the box. The magazines are pretty nice, and I have seen worse sights on more expensive 1911s. If a Commander-sized version were available right now, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it!
