I currently have about 8 handguns, 3 rifles and a shotgun.  I'll be moving soon to an area (large city) where a gun safe is probably necessary.  What kind of gun safe will give me biggest bang for the buck.

Try the safes and home security forum in the armory section; there's a lot of material there.

I would start with the local gun shops.

When I was shopping for a safe all my local gun shops had their safes discounted and offered them tax free if you could pick up.  They didn't advertise you just had to drive over and take a look.  I was able to get a great deal this way.  Much better deal than anything I saw at Cabela's or anywhere else.

The advised I would give is get one twice as big as you think you need, don't get an electronic lock and bolt it down to the floor. Sometimes you can find a used safe (generally someone moving who doesn't want to transport it or upgrading to something larger) for a good deal. You can have the combo changed and still come out ahead by a good margin. Sometimes gunstores or clubs around here will have a bulletin board for people selling such things.

Yep, most complaints I've heard about safes are centered around electronic locks.

If you have an Atwoods nearby, go check out theirs... pretty good prices too.
Just stay away from the metal wall locker style... very far away.

check out bear safes, out of okc, ok.
i'm about to buy my second one.
as someone above posted, buy at least twice as big as you think you'll need.
the guy who put me onto bears has several safes marked for: m-i-l silver, mother's silver, etc...
when i got my bear they came in non-fire lined; now they're all fire lined.

I'd like to agree with what is being said here about electronic locks.  They are very handy, but when it goes south (as many seem to do) you'll wish you had a good old manual one.  Thank goodness it died when the door was open....

Manual dial all the way.

And like tool boxes.  Buy the biggest one you can afford so you don't have to do it twice.  If it's heavy enough you will find out who your friends really are...
