Are Military/Government 1911 holsters from the 1930's & 40's to valuable to use (And far more viable as a collector item) and decent Reproductions work as range use items ? and what variations of repro holsters would you guys recomend ?

Originals are getting up there in price, so for range use, I'd use a replica.

There are two sources for replicas:

The absolute best are those made by El Paso Saddlery.
They make replicas of the Model 1912 Mounted of Cavalry holster, and the Model 1916 Dismounted holster.
They call these their model 1911 and 1940.
These are the absolute finest made, and are the equal or better than originals.

Note that their new web site has a glitch.  The links are hidden in the black band at the top.

They offer the holsters in right or left hand, and with various stamps.
They also offer the officer's belt and leather mag pouch.

I bought a 1940 back in the early 1970's and after years of hard use, it's still good.

The second source is Pacific Canvas & Leather.
PC&L actually make the holsters sold by all the other sources.,
PC&L holsters are made in China, reportedly with American supplied hardware.
These are good quality, but NOT up to El Paso standards, and are NOT exactly like the originals.

PC&L offer three holster types.
The Model 1912 Mounted (Cavalry) holster.  Which has a swivel in the drop loop.
The rare Model 1912 Dismount holster, which no one back then liked.
The Model 1916 which was the standard holster up to the 1980's and which replaced the 1912 Dismount holster.

If you want to use a Model 1916 holster with a leather belt, buy the leather drop loop:
